- I just wanted to say that originally, I was completely against the idea of giving the student section a name. I am in agreement with those in the "Rename the Student Section the Student Section" group. However, I believe that the people in marketing are already determined to change the name, and since they are going to do that, you might as well vote for a good one and prevent us from ever being called "The Blue Crew."
The main point of this group is really that we are trying to outdo the people that want to rename the stadium "The Domicile."
I (Ben) just want to point out that renaming the student section does not just apply to football. Ill admit I'm guilty for only posting pictures of the the football student section so far. Marketing's idea for the student section having a name, is that they want to create a sense of pride that goes along with belonging to the student section regardless of the sport.
I think the best example of what they want to do would be "The Bench". Many people feel that part of being in "The Bench" is taking pride in not only being there at the game but also in making ones presence felt. The idea of giving student sections a general name has the possibility to create a sense of pride and purpose for those cheering on the Bears regardless of the sport.
Back to my Bench/basketball example, I just want to say that "The Bench" takes pride in what they do but what about the other students behind the South basket? Although giving that section as well as others a name does not necessarily mean people will be louder or more spirited, but it couldn't hurt trying to create a feeling of collective responsibility towards making the student section as good as it can be (whatever that may entail). Unfortunately Cal students do not have a strong tradition at sports, but maybe as “The Epicenter”, or whatever other silly name we can come up with, we can come together to create a new tradition, one that we can take more pride in.
