GEOLOGY & PALEONTOLOGY - MILESTONES IN 2009

CHARLES DARWIN, ORIGIN OF SPECIES - This year marks the 200th Anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th Anniversary of publication of his most famous work, Origin of Species.

CHARLES WALCOTT, BURGESS SHALE - Closer to home, it is the 100th Aniversary of Charles Doolittle Walcott's Discovery of the Burgess Shale.

The Opening Gala at the Eighth BC Paleontological Symposium will be called the Walcott Icebreaker. There will also be a W.R. Danner Banquet honoring Dr.Ted Danner's life long contribution to geology.

The Eighth British Columbia Paleontological Symposium will be held May 15-18, 2009, at the University of British Columbia, Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Gregory Wilson, a Permian fossil mammal specialist. Fossil Mammals of the Pacific Northwest will be highlighted as well as recent local paleontological research. www.bcfossils.ca
