OpenCut is a completely open-source film competition designed to encourage people to take professionally shot material and edit it in their own way. As there is no "one way" to tell a story, so too can stories benefit from being re-edited and re-told from many different vantage points and perspectives.
An initiative started by Torrey Loomis in 2008, OpenCut seeks to achieve the following:
--Create an open-source model to encourage creativity among editors and filmmakers by allowing them to work on 35mm film grade material
--Promote the use of RED in production and post
--Stimulate creative discussion among editors and filmmakers
OpenCut winners are officially designated as editor-of-record on projects and their work is submitted to multiple film festivals for tremendous exposure.
OpenCut features work from many different directors and different genres including action, dramatic, commercial, music video, and short form documentary.
OpenCut material is always shot on RED to preserve the highest quality available to filmmakers today. When editing an OpenCut project, there will never be a need to work with subpar imagery.
