The old adage “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over” exists for a reason. The time has come once again to prove the saying right.

Heading into the current NHL season, 155 best-of-seven series have seen one side jump out to a 3-0 lead. So far, only two teams have ever reeled off four straight wins to overcome the deficit and take the series.

First, there were the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. Pushed to the brink by the Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Leafs stood their ground and stormed back to clinch the Cup in Game 7. Thirty-three years later, a youthful New York Islanders squad stunned the Penguins in their 1975 quarterfinal matchup, erasing the 0-3 hole they were in to send Pittsburgh packing.

While NBA teams have yet to make such history in 85 tries, Boston sports fans witnessed the incredible feat just a few short years ago, courtesy of Major League Baseball’s Red Sox. Facing elimination at the hands of the rival Yankees, the Red Sox got the ultimate revenge in knocking off New York in their American League Championship series in 2004.

The Canadiens, meanwhile, have been down 3-0 eight times in their history. Game 4 has marked the end of their season three times, while they’ve successfully forced a fifth contest on five occasions.

What does 2009 hold? The answer comes Wednesday.
