Persepolis is a French-language autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi that describes her childhood in Iran during the overthrow of the Shah. It is followed by Persepolis 2, which details Satrapi's life afterwards, during the war between Iran and Iraq. Persepolis 3 covers her high school years in Austria, and Persepolis 4 describes her return to Iran, where she went to college, got married, and later got divorced, before moving to France, where she lives now.
The animated film based on the graphic novels of the same name was written and directed by her and Vincent Paronnaud. It tells the story of a young girl in Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Through the eyes of the nine-year-old Marjan it shows how people's hopes were dashed as the fundamentalists took power, forced the veil on women and imprisoned thousands. The title is a reference to the historical town of Persepolis. It won the Prize of the Jury at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was released in France and Belgium on June 27. In her speech on receiving the Cannes award, Satrapi said "Although this film is universal, I wish to dedicate the prize to all Iranians."
