Habib ‘Paapu’ Ullah died on Thursday 3rd July 2008 during a stop and search by Police Officers on a vehicle in a car park in High Wycombe at approximately 7.15pm. He was 39 years old and leaves behind a young family.

We are concerned how a man can die in the process of being arrested and how he came to have breathing difficulties. There is an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation taking place into his death.

Report on first anniversary vigil and public meeting 3.7.09

On the 3rd of July 2009 the Justice for Habib ‘Paps’ Ullah campaign held a vigil and a public meeting to mark the first anniversary of his death. The vigil outside High Wycombe Police Station from 3-7pm was attended by over 60 people over the four hours and was a opportunity publicly to profile the incident and the campaign and many leaflets were distributed down Queen Victoria road outside the station to passers-by and to vehicles stopping. The highlight was 17 balloons being released by children and young people to mark the 17 deaths in custody that have taken place around the country since last July and this includes Habib’s death.

The public meeting at the Hub, Union Baptist Church was attended by 30 people and they heard updates from the campaign, the family solicitor Jules Cary, a statement from the family and guest speakers such as Marcia Rigg, the sister of Sean Rigg who died in custody at Brixton in August 2008, who also spoke on behalf of the United Campaign Against Police Violence (UCAPV) and Estelle du Boulay from Newham Monitoring Project. Messages of support were sent from 4wardEver, from our local Gurdwara in High Wycombe and Janet Alder, sister of Christopher Alder who died in custody in Hull in 1998 and who is still fighting for justice 11 years on.
