The fight against James Franco as this year’s commencement speaker has gained national attention. The UCLA Class of 2009 is livid, and rightfully so, that former classmate will be its keynote speaker. UC Merced has Michelle Obama, and we have the guy that sat in the back of our English class in between shooting his award-nominated movies.

James Franco is a good-looking and admirable actor (with the exception of his performance in “Tristan... (read more)

UPDATES:

James Franco is no longer speaking at Commencement. I would like to make it clear that I DO NOT take any kind of credit for this. It is unrelated to the group's activity, as James Franco has a professional conflict on the day of the graduation.

FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T READ CAREFULLY: It is not the purpose of this group to embarrass James Franco or anything of the sort. This is a protest that was addressed to our administration and was very civilly received by them. James Franco's subsequent cancellation is unrelated to our group, but the result of his professional obligations. How likely is it that a facebook group with almost no activity for two months haunted him and caused him to drop out? I am not that egocentric, thank you very much.

TO ALL WHO POST ON THE WALL OR MESSAGE BOARDS: Racial and homophobic epithets will not be tolerated. Neither will threats to the members of the group, or threats to James Franco. Anyone posting such things will have their posts deleted and accounts reported to facebook.

The group photo has been changed. The original photo was intended as a tongue-in-cheek comment, but it seems to have angered more people than intended. I hope the new one is sufficiently neutral. The ire from the previous photo was detracting from the real point we are trying to make.

To lodge your protest, email LSEvents@support.ucla.edu

If you like, post samples of the letters you've sent in to help inspire other dissatisfied seniors as they protest!
