***UPDATE 30/07/09***

Congratulations to Ken Nichols and Scott Chapman who have, in accordance with the society’s constitution, been elevated to the hallowed status of Fellows Honoris Causa! I’m sure few have bothered to read the constitution (great for insomnia) so you might also like to know that this means they get to use the post nominal designation of FOS, and who doesn’t love letters after their name? They also get to wear the society’s ceremonial robes, photos of those will be posted soon.

People have already been signing up for membership, and pledging which is fantastic, Thank you. It’s also been suggested we have a lower “donation”, something that everyone can contribute without it hurting too much. Remember Richard Prior and Superman III?. Maybe you could send the loose change you have left over in your PayPal account, or maybe round your piggy bank down to the nearest fiver? Every penny counts. If everyone gave just a quid, dollar or Euro we’d have enough to take things to the next level. Any currency welcome, and amount. If you want to post it, and people have already offered then send it to The Optimists Society, Arch 897 Holyrood Street, London SE1 2EL.

It is only by donations, membership subs, and Fellowship pledges that we will be able to take the society on and really achieve our goals. Having a some money in the bank is going to allow us to get really creative and spread the word more effectively, get more people involved and ultimately affect real change in the community.

SUMMER OF LOVE EVENT – 5am Sat 1st August, Trafalgar Square, London.
Plans for this Saturday’s Summer of Love event - as part of Anthony Gormley’s One and Other installation - have now been finalised. We’ve decided to go with a silent disco. The logistics of getting the planned sound system 28ft up onto the 4th plinth, keeping it dry and then fighting off the powers that be who would have undoubtedly frowned upon loud music at 5am, meant it could have become more about the system and not about optimism and spreading some love.

So the link below takes you to a page where you can download a mix, prepared by Jonnie Polyester (cheers Jonnie), with classic tunes from ‘69, ‘79, ‘89, ‘99 and ‘09. There’s something for every taste. It will last for the duration of my time on the plinth. Less a couple of minutes to get things ready at the start. All you need to do is download the file; cue it up on your PC or MP3 player then press play when you see the sign on the web-stream if you can’t make it in person www.oneandother.co.uk or when I shout “Now” for those that can.

I know it’s a pretty antisocial hour but it would be amazing to see optimists and random people dancing away to themselves across Trafalgar Square at dawn. So if you’re out and haven’t made it home or just can’t sleep, in the immortal words of Lesley Crowther “Come on Down!”

Shout if you need any other info, or have any ideas of messages you think I should “broadcast” whilst the world is watching. I plan to have coloured cards with thoughts and feelings written on to show to the camera. Email them to halffull@theoptimistssociety.com

*** UPDATE 26/07/09 ***

So I guess you might have wondered what I’ve been up to, with no updates for quite so long. Where have the past three months gone? Well since I last posted news I’ve been working flat out behind the scenes to achieve our bigger goal of taking the society to the next level - giving it a more established formal legal structure, launching our own social network and a proper membership scheme plus also creating a space from which to operate.

I’ve made some fantastic progress in the past 3 months. This week we complete works on Arch 897, our 2000 sq ft arched studio space under London Bridge station. This will become the headquarters for the society. Somewhere we can organise events, gather together for workshops, seminars and of course enjoy loads of fun and silliness. Members are more than welcome to come down and have a look whenever they like. Just email and arrange a time.

To ensure the society is formalised and founded on the right legal footing. I’ve had various meetings with lawyers and business advisors, the result of which is a constitution for the society (see link to download a copy), a not for profit company registered, bank accounts etc. We are also in the process of registering a community interest company (called a CiC) which is similar to a charity, but not quite as restricted in its activities. It will also give us the ability to apply for grants from charity funds to support our activities.

We’ve also been busy developing our own online presence. Using a system called Dolphin, we are creating the society’s very own social network, like Facebook only better and more suited to our specific needs. Optimists from all over the world will be able to join, share ideas, organise events and see what other optimists are up to. It should provide a more flexible and tailored solution than Facebook, and will include a number of ideas we’ve developed over the past 18 months of the society’s existence. It will also allow us to build our international network more effectively. Watch this space for more info, it should go live by September. As usual anyone with web or content experience who’d like to help out would be very welcome. Just email and we can discuss details.

I mentioned in my last post that funds were tight. I also mentioned the possibility of introducing membership fees to help support development of the society. The reaction to this has been entirely positive. We’re yet to finalise the details but it will certainly include increased access to the society’s new social network, a membership card which in time will deliver some fantastic discounts and other benefits, priority booking for events, preferential rates on booking space at Arch 897 and discounts on merchandise.

Development of the above to this point has taken every penny I had saved. To ensure that we are able to implement everything as soon as possible we’re now looking to you, our existing members, to raise some funds. I’ve already had pledges of support from a few members, special thanks to Scott for his kind offer. We’re now looking to find a further 50 members who are willing to pre-register for membership which will give us the funds to fully launch the new site and membership scheme, get credit card style membership cards produced etc. This membership will be £35 for a year. Any donation would be more than welcome, and anyone who donates more than £200 will be given fellowship status, and honorary life membership. Donations / Payments can be made via the society’s PayPal account, go to www.paypal.co.uk and send funds to shop@theoptimistssociety.com Of course I understand many of you are just in this for the fun, so please don’t feel obligated in any way.

As always I really appreciate your messages and support. The society wouldn’t exist without you, its members. All this work is to ensure we can achieve what we want, a happier more positive world to live in. The coming months promise to be amazing. There are some fantastic ideas bouncing around and opportunities for the society to grow and succeed abound.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you want any more information on anything mentioned above.

***UPDATE April 14th 2009***

For those of you interested, yet again the BBC called asking for an Optimists view on a current news story. This time the Mental Health Foundations report that society is more anxious than ever.

***UPDATE April 2nd 2009***

NEW LOCAL AND REGIONAL GROUPS

The society has been growing steadily through the year, and we’re now in 48 countries and have 2000 plus members. Because people are so spread out we felt it was advisable to start some more local and regional groups in the places where we have the most members. We will add more groups as the society grows, and people ask for them. We will publish some guidance notes shortly on how to set-up your own Optimists Society wherever you are. In the meantime please feel free to email if you think that Croydon or West Palm Beach really deserve their own group right now. Once these groups get going the idea will be to have local people take admin control and begin to organise their own events and activities. Click on the links below to join the group for you, and message if you need any help.

MEMBERSHIP FEES
We have been discussing some options on how to get funds into the society to allow us to do more of things we want to. Our current suggestion is to have a membership fee of around £20 per year, for which you’d get a membership card and t-shirt, and access to the members section of the new website etc. Not paying wouldn’t stop you from taking part in anything but being a paid up member would allow you to bask in the knowledge that you had properly contributed to the cause and helped make everything happen. I wish I had the funds available to do all of this on my own but having just been laid off and told I won’t be getting the thousands I’m owed I have to find ways to fund the development of the society. No decisions have been made and we really would appreciate your input. Email halffull@theoptimistssociety.com We’d love your thoughts and feelings on it.

CONGA WORLD RECORD
We set a provisional record, woo hoo! Of course we’re saving the real fanfare for when we get confirmation. The evidence is being gathered and it’s down to Guinness to say yay or nay. Watch this space. A HUGE thank you to all those who took part, and everyone who helped out before and on the day. We’ve already raised £1,200 but it would be amazing to reach our target of £2,000 so if you haven’t already please go to http://www.justgiving.com/congaworldrecord and donate, and of course you could tell friends and family to do the same.

MISSING CONGAEES
Anyone who took part and hasn’t messaged their contact details PLEASE send them to me ASAP. There were 2 people who took part on the day who didn’t leave their contact details and we need them to submit the evidence.

RADIO
Did another 3 radio interviews this week. If anyone is bored enough to want to listen to me waffle on then go here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00jg85w/Chris_Evans_31_03_2009/ think its about 25 mins in.

COMING UP...

23rd April – Help for Heroes Superhero World Record
6.30pm Trafalgar Square, causes don’t come much more deserving than this. Please pass the word, get a costume and come to help us break another record. We’ll be heading off into the West End after for a bit of a pub crawl but the event itself will last about 20 mins. See you there.

If you need any persuading why this is a good cause check out Phil Packers story here. www.philpacker.com

26th April – London Marathon
From around 9am across London, get out and cheer on the fantastic nutters who will be running 26 miles to raise millions for good causes. Details of where the Optimists will meet-up will be published soon.

Crikey, that’s a long update. In future I’ll try and do it in more bite sized chunks.

***UPDATE 05/02/09***

OPTIMISTS WE NEED YOU

Have any of you got skills to offer you think might be helpful?? Right now we particularly need the below skills. In the future we will be looking to generate income to cover costs but as of now things are run on my pocket money so some help from you guys growing things would be amazing.

We really need a lawyer to help turn the company we have set-up into a charity.

We also need web designers and developers to help put our online strategy into action. We're building our own social network system (using a white label piece of technology). Really need people who understand MySQL and PHP.

If you have any other skills to offer or think a friend might be able to help then please email us halffull@theoptimistssociety.com

*** UPDATE 19/01/09***

So for us in the UK the day is coming to an end, but down under its just beginning and to top of the most amazing optimistic and slightly surreal of days I'm about to do an interview over the phone with a breakfast show in Brisbane. If only my friends there would be up at this time in the morning!

Thank you to everyone who helped make today a reality. Tony, Kirsty, Kate, Louise and everyone else at Amazon PR. Gareth, Eloise and Edwin for their efforts during today. Neil and Leela for making the Comedy store so hilarious. Malcolm for coming all the way from Scotland to be there. Rach T. for coming and laughing quite so loud. Rachel A. for the cupcakes. And last but by no means least all you lovely members of The Optimists Society, our new members and all those who sent such amazing supportive messages throughout the day.

This feeling rocks. Hope you've all had a similarly positve and optimistic day.

Lets make sure we continue the good work from here.

Will update as soon as we have plans together for our next event.

:-)
