Kibera, possibly the largest slum in East Africa, has a population of over 600,000 residents, half of whom are under the age of 15, and live in an area of Nairobi, Kenya that is the size of Manhattan's Central Park. There is a dearth of basic government services, including provision of clean water.
Carolina for Kibera, Inc. (CFK) is a nonprofit charitable corporation and program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill based at the Center for Global Initiatives. CFK, Inc. is the patron of all three CFK-Kenya organizations: the youth sports association, medical clinic, and the Binti Pamoja Center.
Each organization is led by residents of Kibera. Oversight and governing is provided by an executive committee composed of leading members of CFK and a member of the CFK-Kenya Board of Trustees.
