NORFOLK (September 25) - "Beware the question you ask, for you soon will know the answer" is the macabre warning given by the ominous Doctor Caligari to the fairgoers of the town of Holstenwall. The Foppish Dandies & Co. presents the world premiere of its stage production of 'The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari', a multisensory adaptation from the acclaimed 1920 German silent film. The play tells the story of the deranged doctor and the fortune-telling somnambulist Cesare who arrive at the town fair amidst a series of grisly murders. Regarded as cinema's first true horror masterpiece, the film, written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer and directed by Robert Wiene, is artistically acclaimed for its frightening and distorted expressionist design and its influence on contemporary films. Says director Philip Odango, "This stage adaptation combines Edwardian-era elements with Asian horror, bearing a phantasmic foetus between 'Sweeney Todd' and 'The Grudge'."
Presented by 40th Street Stage and The Foppish Dandies & Co., who brought last year's Hampton Roads' premiere of 'Bat Boy The Musical', 'Caligari' is produced by Donna Dickerson, written and directed by Philip Odango, and assistant directed by Bill Armstrong. Costume engineering by Debi McGill. Hair and makeup by Grace Swiney. Stage lighting and audio/visual engineering by Ben Fuglaar. Music by Matti Paalanen and Teemu Vehkala. Film lighting by Phil Duffy.
