*****************WHAT IT IS****************
FREEDOM TIME is an ambitious new monthly event devoted to spreading the gospel of JAZZ music.
Showcasing a vast amount of styles both new & old, including:
HARD BOP, SPIRITUAL, SOUL JAZZ, MODAL, LATIN, NU JAZZ, VOCAL, ETHIOPIAN, JAZZ FUNK, BRASILIAN & more.
For a LONG time now, we have felt that real Jazz music was not being properly represented in this city - particularly in the manor or with the scope we knew it could be.
At last, all the right elements have come together for us to finally be able to offer this event to the good people of Toronto...
FREEDOM TIME represents the culmination of our collective efforts and an honest reflection of our desire to bring something unique and vital to this city's underground music scene.
This is NOT just Toronto's take on what London or Japan have already done. While we respect the vibrant Jazz Dance scenes created in those cities and see them as inspiration for this project, we know that this can be something entirely our own.
We don't take this responsibility lightly and intend on making this nothing short of a spiritual experience, especially for those of you who've long been waiting to hear this music played w/ the attention to detail & the passion it deserves.
***********FREQUENCY & FORMAT**********
FREEDOM TIME will happen every 3rd SUNDAY of the month beginning at 7:00pm & lasting until 2:00am.
Expect a mix of music that reflects a deep understanding of Jazz's wide range of styles & history, including a large amount of new music created by a youthful vanguard of forward-thinking musicians from right around the globe.
We should stress however, this is not only a DJ event but will carry a live element as well, featuring invited guest vocalists & instrumentalists performing periodically.
Our general rule for selecting these live guests is 'the more experimental the better'. Keeping this in mind, expect a great number of these performers to be inspired by elements of Jazz music, but not necessarily confined to it's somewhat limiting classifications or terminologies.
**********BIRTHDAYS & PASSINGS**********
Each month, we will celebrate the birth & honour the passing of some of Jazz music's most notable artists. While we intend on highlighting a great deal of our favorite artists we may not be able to feature everyone of them.
Never the less, expect to hear choice selections from each artists body of work, both new & old.
General Eclectic will also be rendering sketches of some of these artists each month to be placed around the venue.
We invite those of you eager to express yourself to bring sketches of your favorite Jazz artists.
There is a link to the long list of birth dates and obituaries in the posted link section at the bottom of the page.
*******ABOUT TEQUILA BOOKWORM*******
This venue is quite possibly the most well suited space for an intimate Sunday evening of this nature, featuring 2 gorgeous turn of the century rooms, complete w/ hardwood floors, high ceilings & a generous sound system to bring the music to the right sonic & spiritual elevation. Tequila Bookworm also has a beautiful outdoor patio that will be crucial for the summer months of July & August!
The front room will function as both stage, dance floor and bar area, while the back room & patio will most likely be used as a chill space w/ more seating and lower sound levels.
**************OUR OBJECTIVES**************
Ultimately, we would like to see this event grow into a hub for like minded music lovers, artists and creative peoples. Offering not just a space to chill but also express ones self.
At it's core, Freedom Time is the expression of our deep love for Jazz music, but with any luck may also grow into something that is pivotal and transformative in this city!
As Sabu Martinez once said on his classic 1973 "Afro Temple" record; it is "our sweat, stink, dirt and above all soulful love..." that is the true lifeforce behind this event.
