Description:: First of all, this is a South African group, so information will be relevant to the people living in South Africa.

I created this group to try and get as many people who can donate blood to donate and also to raise awareness about the need for donations. This is a cause that I believe in, mostly I guess because of my situation, but I do feel that we can change the situation in South Africa and throughout the world by pulling together and each doing our bit.

Who should join?
Anyone interested in learning more about this cause, people who donate blood, people who are thinking about it, people who support it etc.

If you are not interested in donating personally or can't, and even if you are, please join anyway and invite all of your friends, so we can try and get as many people as possible to join, therefore we can raise awareness and get as many donations as possible thereby saving lives.

The blood banks are struggling to supply enough blood for everyone who needs it and they always have been.

Why am I so interested in this?

I have a rare blood disease, Sideroblastic Anaemia. This year my condition got worse, and I had to start blood transfusions every 3 weeks and will need them for the rest of my life. I am not the only one who needs blood, the people who have thalassemia(hope that's spelt right) require the same treatment as me. Blood is often given to cancer patients. Then it is also used in emergency situations. We all need blood. At the hospital I go to, in just my ward alone they use aound 50 units of blood a week. That's 450 people as you can only donate once every 56 days(approx. 9 weeks). And all those 450 people need to be regular donors. This is 1 ward, in 1 hospital, in 1 city. How many more donors are needed around the country?? The blood bank does have shortages often and then we suffer.

So I appeal to you all, if your blood is safe, and you are suitable, to please donate. You cannot know what it means to us, unless you know someone who's needed blood.

To all of you who out there who donate, I thank you, even though that does not come near to describing the appreciation I have for you people, if you did not donate, I would not have gotten through this year.

So please everyone, it's relatively painless, does not take that long and think how much good you'd be doing.

You have to be between the ages of 16 and 65 to donate though.

What is my main purpose in creating this group??

*Create awareness about the lack of blood being donated
*Encourage more people to become regular donors so that there is a bigger supply of blood available
*helping people who have needed blood by sharing experiences

PLEASE NEVER THINK OTHER PEOPLE ARE DOING IT AND THEREFORE YOU DON'T NEED TO, EVERYONE IS NEEDED :)
