Have you made a New Year resolution to lose weight and/or get fit and eat healthier in 2010?
Wrexham is known as the fattest town in Wales (see this BBC article: http://tinyurl.com/y9aj7sg) and it's true that lots of us need to lose weight and get fit.
Can we work together to create a community fitness group? Exercising in a group can help people to keep their New Year’s resolution to get fit and fight the Christmas bulge.
It’s important that people get into a habit with exercise so it is not seen as a chore. Exercise becomes very easy if you get into a habit – people who exercise all the time do not have to psych themselves up to go to the gym or for a run as it part of their routine. However you are more likely to commit to exercise if you commit to it as a group, as one person acts as a check to the other. We are good at letting ourselves down but have to justify it more if someone else is going too. If exercise is a social activity, then you link it to something you enjoy doing, and are more likely to stick at it.
Be open-minded about finding an activity you enjoy doing, and consider taking along a friend. It might be awkward for a while, but people need to modify the way they think and talk about exercise. Saying, ‘I’m no good’ is very different to saying ‘this is difficult but I am getting better’.”
I’m hoping that people will use this Facebook group to set up community fitness groups in different parts of Wrexham who perhaps meet once or twice a week to exercise and share health tips. We have local parks such as Bellevue and Alyn Waters with exercise equipment for adults but they are rarely used probably because people are too embarrassed on their own but would in a group. Some groups might meet up for running or cycling or to try out a local gym.
This group as a whole can be used for sharing health and fitness tips and can also be used to promote groups in the area (new groups could perhaps set up a Facebook page or event too??)
If you have any ideas for this group email me at jane@janeredfernjones.co.uk. Also if you know of any local groups or have any tips to share please use the wall and the discussion forums.
Let’s make 2010 the year that Wrexham becomes the fittest town in Wales!
