"We bind our hands together with the sacred thread of unity. Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus alike--come all and work together for peace, friendship, and unity. Together we work to overcome our difficulties and dream of charming days ahead."
-Howrah Women's Association Motto, India
Ten Thousand Villages, Austin is a volunteer run, fair trade 501 (c) (3) non-profit retail store providing income to artisans from more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in the Austin area.
The inspiration for our name came from a Mahatma Gandhi quote- “…India is not to be found in its few cities but in the 700,000 villages…we have hardly ever paused to inquire if these folks get sufficient to eat and clothe themselves with." To us, each village in the world, as captured in our logo with lighted homes, is a unique, distinctive community that can offer us extraordinary products made of their own rich cultures and traditions."
Our mission is to provide vital, fair income to the artisans with whom we work by empowering them to contribute to their communities as well as to improve housing and to provide food, education and healthcare for their families. Our vision is to help eradicate global poverty, one artisan, one village at a time.
In addition to their global commitment, the Austin store continually strives to spread the message of Fair Trade to the local community through outreach programs and long-term partnerships with like minded individuals and organizations. The store arranges benefit events for non profit partners that market the event to their supporters and receive upto 15% of the night’s sales.
