Hi Everyone,

We hope that you are all set for Christmas and are looking forward to a well deserved break. We know that we are! We thought that we would up date the page with fundraising ideas for January and February so that you can start planning over the Christmas holidays. For all you guys departing in 2010 we hope that when the itineraries are online from the 23rd December this will get you excited about your expedition and give you the extra push to help with the last part of your fundraising.

Here are some ideas to help you out in January and February!

• New Years Resolutions- get sponsored by your friends and family to give something up. Set yourself a time limit and either get people to sponsor you per day or for the full length of time.

• Twelfth Night- This is the traditional time for people to take down their Christmas decorations and throwing out their trees. People often are too busy to dispose of their trees so maybe set up a service going round your local area collecting people’s trees to recycle. Charge them a small fee or ask for a donation to your expedition.

• Unwanted Christmas presents- Sell your unwanted Christmas presents on eBay or organise a present swap. Charge people for entry and get them to bring any unused present that they want to swap.

• Burns Night- Burns Night is celebrated each year on 25th January in memory of the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. Burns Suppers are hugely popular in Scotland, and all around the world, to celebrate Burns Night. Think about organising a party or dinner and charge people for entry, you might also want to include things like a quiz and a raffle or Auction of Promises.

• Sweepstakes- There is a number of events running in January and February that you could run sweepstakes for. These include the Snooker Masters, (January 10th-17th) RBS Six Nations Rugby (6th February – 20th March) and the Brit Awards (16th February) A sweepstake is where people pay to enter a draw, get drawn a team or artist out of a hat. The person with the winning team wins a share of the money taken.

• Valentine’s Day- There are lots of things that you could think about organising including a disco, meals at restaurants, selling flowers, and delivering secret messages. You could think about making and selling cards or crafts to sell as presents or selling Hershey kisses and delivering these to people’s crushes.

• Chinese New Year- how about organising a meal at a local Chinese restaurant or having a go at cooking dinner yourself?

Maybe approach a local restaurant and see if you could hold a meal. Ask them to plan a set menu for a certain price and then charge a bit extra to raise some profit. If you can get enough people into the restaurant this could be a great money spinner. Alternatively you could ask for a percentage of the drinks takings. One challenger was charged £10 a head for food and then charged £15 per ticket. 50 people brought tickets so that gives you some idea about the type of money you could raise.

As well as charging people for entry to the party, you could try and raise some extra money by putting a recipe book together. Include all the recipes you used for your party, as well as any extras you may have practised at home. Give your customers a step-by-step guide to each dish so that they can recreate them as well as you did. I am sure that your food will be a great success and everyone will want to know your recipe secrets! You could either ask for a small donation for each book or charge a few pounds each.

If you wanted to be a bit more adventurous with your Recipe Book, visit www.lulu.com and you can design and publish your book to make it look really professional.

• Shrove Tuesday/ Pancake Day- set up a stall at school and sell pancakes with a variety of topping. It is a good idea to make these before hand or buy ready made ones to save on time. You could also have a sponsored pancake flip to see how many times you can flip a pancake before dropping it.

When doing any fundraising for your World Challenge Expedition make sure you explain what you will be doing, highlighting that it will not be a holiday but an educational experience. Emphasise aspects of your expedition such as your trek or project work. For more ideas look on the World Challenge member’s site.

These are just a few ideas and the possibilities for your fundraising are endless. If you have some great seasonal fundraising ideas please share them with everyone on the wall. Contact the fundraising support team on 01494 427601 if you need your log in details or more advice and ideas to help you reach your target.

Good luck with your fundraising and please let us know of any successful fundraising events you have held!
