Me and Mickie James: The Beginning...

‘Me and Mickie James’ started around 2004.

I was writing different stories about body parts - a man with one leg, feet, bum, willie and so on - and ‘Bodily Parts’, the first M&MJ story, was one of these. A hunchback and his friend move down to London together, they are in a pop group called ‘Down By Law’, they want to be famous.

So that was the start.

Christmas came and I thought about writing a Christmas story. At the end of ‘Bodily Parts’, Down By Law, the group, had split up. I wanted to write about them again and the story ‘Christmas Comeback’, or ‘Hunchback Christmas’ evolved.

I still wasn’t really thinking about M&MJ becoming a novel but over the next couple of years I wrote more stories, some about the group but more often not. I wrote a few stories about the Iraq war. ‘Bob and Dwayne: Astronauts’ was one of these and then somehow Down By Law get sent out to entertain the troops in ‘Wacky Iraqi’.

So I found that two years down the track I had seven stories about the group. Seventy thousand words. The last three stories had been almost sequential. I was beginning to realise that somehow I had written a novel although I never intended to.
