You KAN be a part of the cure!
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) presents the Kids Advocacy Network. KAN is a group of youth advocates (both kids and teens) across America and throughout the world who want to share their voices on important Type 1 diabetes issues and use their leadership skills to influence legislation in JDRF's goal to find a cure.
Mission Statement:
As the youth in our communities, we strive to have our voices heard above the crowds, not to be a part of the masses and to change the characteristics of society for the better. We, diabetics and non-diabetics alike, aim to educate people about a disease and its complications that affects us. Together we do everything we KAN to find a cure.
What KAN you do to help?
--be first responders to JDRF Action Alerts
--organize school/university/communal recruitment programs
--serve as community ambassadors
--participate in online campaigns
--Work on JDRF special projects, including the “Promise to Remember Me” campaign. Visit the PRMC website for more details: http://promise.jdrf.org .
***Just to Distingush- The difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.***
TYPE 1 Diabetes:Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 1 diabetes usually strikes people in childhood, adolescence or early adulthood, but lasts a lifetime. People with Type 1 must take multiple injections on insulin daily or continuous infusion of insulin through a pump just to survive.
TYPE 2 Diabetes:Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which a person’s body still produces insulin but is unable to use it effectively. Type 2 is usually diagnosed in adulthood and does not always require insulin injections. However, increased obesity has led to a recent “epidemic” in cases of type 2 diabetes in young adults.
***Taking insulin does not cure any type of diabetes nor prevent the possibility of its eventual and devastating effects: kidney failure, blindness, nerve damage, amputation, heart attack and stroke.
