- On Friday the last of our 68 top nature photographers returned, completing the 14 month intensive field work phase that covered 118 photo assignments to all 48 European countries.
We now hold an impressive image bank 150,000-strong. A world first! The most comprehensive and up-to-date picture collection ever gathered of Europe’s natural jewels and the very centre of all output for the Wild Wonders of Europe project.
What we have achieved so far as a small private enterprise is truly amazing – and something that noone has managed to do, ever, on any continent, anywhere in the world.
“Braving soaring heat, deep seas and extreme cold, our Dream Team of photographers have created a breathtaking document of our shared natural heritage. Physical proof of an amazing comeback story and showing a side of Europe previously not well known - with really wild landscapes and charismatic species. It is truly a unique achievement“. "A good friend and assistant during the Wild Wonders of Europe mission discovered a Grebe that was curious enough to dive at close distance (less than one metre!). I went snorkelling but did not find the Grebe. On my way back to land I suddenly noticed the Grebe coming from a reed bed right up to me. It swam underwater and came closer and closer. It took about several minutes and then I realized that the bird saw its own reflection in my underwater lens! I even started to be a little afraid when the bird kept coming back and approached me under water until a distance of just centimetres!" It really is true! Wildlife in Europe IS coming back!
OK, yes there are those lonesome species that have drawn the short straw, some of them iconic, and they need our help, but incredible as it may seem, wildlife is on the rebound in Europe, BIG time. Isnt that just the most brilliant news!
Here is something fantastic to celebrate!
European wildlife has been quietly multiplying in almost all corners of the continent. And here is the proof..
The otter is coming back.
The beaver is coming back.
The lammergeier and the other majestic vultures are coming back.
The sea eagles and the golden eagles and the imperial eagles are too.
And the wolves and the bears and the lynx and even the wolverines.
And the cranes, and the whooper swans.
And the great bustard and the white stork.
And the walrus and the european bison.
And the grey seal and the harbour seal.
And the killer whale and the beluga whale and the minke whale and the humpback whale and the sperm whale.
And even the blue whale.
And the eagle owl, the great grey owl and the ural owl.
And the arctic fox.
And the peregrine falcon.
And the red deer and the wild boar.
And the spoon-billed stork, the grey heron, the cormorant, and the egrets.
The respect we have given these guys and nature in general over the past few years has paid off. Lets come back with even more success stories in 2009!
