SAY NO TO PHONEBOOKS!
Here is what the campaign is all about:
25 million households and businesses are each delivered at least three phone books each and every year, amounting to an estimated 62,000 tons of annual waste.
Add in the cost of manufacturing, delivering and recycling these phone books, and you have a massive environmental burden which in this day and age is totally unnecessary and avoidable.
It is estimated that the resources used in the production of 75 million books are:
62,000 tons of waste produced – enough to cover Hyde Park twice!!
680,000 barrels of oil wasted in phonebook production (not including the wasted petrol used for their delivery to your doorstep)
2 billion litres of water is used in the production process (not to mention the amount of water wasted in the recycling process)
250 million kilowatts of energy used in the production process (again not mentioning that used in the recycling process) this equates to enough energy being produced to power 60,000 three bedroom houses for a year
Independent research has shown that 70% of UK households would like an opt-in system for receiving phonebooks. We have set up an e-petition to get the government to dio just that.
PLEASE SIGN UP TO THE PETITION - http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/NoPhonebooks/ - We hope to present this to the government/Ofcom with a view to establishing a centralised opt in system.
