FULBRIGHT OFFICIALS WANT TO ATTRACT MORE COMMUNITY COLLEGE FACULTY, ADMINISTRATORS

Officials of the Fulbright Scholar Program hope to see more applications from community college faculty and administrators. According to an interview in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a State Department official noted that both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have included community colleges in discussions of educational collaborations with other countries. The State Department oversees the Fulbright Program, which annually sends students and faculty to study and teach abroad.

December 1 is the deadline for nominations for the All-USA/All-State Community College Academic Team. Please encourage your college to participate and nominate students for these awards, which share a common nomination form.

Members nominated for the All-USA/All-State teams may also be considered for Guistwhite Scholarships. Any member meeting eligibility requirements may apply directly for Guistwhite Scholarships, which also have a December 1 deadline.

REMINDER: ADMINISTRATOR HALLMARK AWARD ENTRIES DUE DECEMBER 1

Hallmark Award entries in administrator categories are due by 5:00 pm Central Time December 1. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes outstanding administrative support through four Hallmark Awards: the Shirley B. Gordon Awards of Distinction for college presidents/CEOs; the Distinguished Administrator Awards for non-CEOs; the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Awards for retiring administrators; and the Distinguished State Community College Director Awards. INDIANA AND GEORGIA REGIONS MEET PINNACLE GOAL

The Indiana and Georgia Regions have met their 2009 Pinnacle Award goals and will each receive a $500 stipend. All regions with induction increases of 10 percent over the previous year will receive Pinnacle Awards.

Chapters may earn up to five scholarships of $45 each (covering International fees), based on increasing membership over the previous year in 5 percent increments. To date, 424 chapters have earned at least one Pinnacle Scholarship. New members must be reported by noon Central Time on December 31, 2009, to be counted toward Pinnacle Awards.

NOTA BENE SUBMISSIONS DUE DECEMBER 4

Members of Phi Theta Kappa currently enrolled in community colleges may submit literary works to be considered for Nota Bene, the Society’s literary honors anthology. Poetry, short stories, personal essays and research papers may be submitted.

Entries for the 2010 edition are due December 4, 2009. The entry judged best overall receives the $1,000 Citation Scholarship; four runners-up receive Reynolds Scholarships of $500 each. PHI THETA KAPPA CHAPTER CHARTERED AT BLACKHAWK TECHNICAL COLLEGE

A new chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has been chartered at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Thirty-three Blackhawk Technical College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the campus on November 12. Dan Rooney, advisor for Western Technical College, Beta Nu Chi Chapter, served as the Phi Theta Kappa headquarters representative for the chartering ceremony. Glenn Hoffarth, Social Science Instructor, will serve as advisor for the new Beta Rho Psi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

NEW HONORS STUDY TOPIC ANNOUNCED

Phi Theta Kappa’s new Honors Study Topic, The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril, and Promise, will be used by chapters beginning in January 2010 and continue through December 2011. The new schedule, following the calendar year rather than extending from Convention to Convention, was adapted after numerous requests from advisors and chapter leaders, said Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs Susan Edwards.

The new Honors Program Guide will be posted on the Phi Theta Kappa website in early January, and a printed Guide will be mailed to each chapter advisor in mid-January. The 10 Issues related to The Democratization of Information that will be addressed in the Guide include:

2. Technology
3. Individual and Community
4. Language/Communication
5. Education
6. Economy and Business
7. Government and Public Policy
8. The Arts
9. Science
10. History/Future

FINAL FIVE STAR UPDATE FORM DUE ON OR BEFORE DECEMBER 31

Advisors and chapter presidents should submit their final Five Star Update Form for 2009 at https://www.ptk.org/fivestar/login.go?servlet=updateform.do&app_root=/fivestar/ as soon as their chapter has completed activities for their Five Star Program Goal. All Update Forms should be received by December 31 but may be submitted at any time.

A chapter’s level of achievement for the year is based on the final Update Form. Chapters participating in the Five Star Program receive local, regional and international recognition based on the level they achieve. (Note: A chapter president must be reported to Headquarters in PAM - https://www.ptk.org/pam/login.do - before they can submit a Five Star Update Form. Use the Chapter Officer Reporting Form in the Chapter Management menu.)

NEW CHAPTER CHARTERED AT NORTHEAST LAKEVIEW COLLEGE

A new chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has been chartered at Northeast Lakeview College in Texas.

Fourteen Northeast Lakeview College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the campus on November 5. RECYCLEMANIA COMPETITION GEARS UP FOR 2010

Phi Theta Kappa chapter leaders are invited to sponsor RecycleMania on their college campuses, as part of Operation Green: Improving Our Communities, the Society’s International Service Program partnership with Keep America Beautiful.

RecycleMania is a 10-week recycling competition each spring that challenges colleges to see who can out-recycle the others. Schools measure and report their recycling weights and are in turn ranked against rival campuses each week from mid-January through the end of March. RecycleMania gives student leaders an opportunity to raise awareness of recycling on campus while earning recognition for their institutions.

A new chapter has been chartered at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Fifty-four Chippewa Valley Technical College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the campus on October 21. A chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society has been chartered at Oxnard College in California.

Fifty-three Oxnard College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the campus on October 21. NEW ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS ANNOUNCED

We are excited to announce two new University-Based Alumni Associations!

University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee chartered this fall with 21 new members. Student Affairs Coordinator Anne Dobson (adobson@sar.usf.edu) will serve as the advisor, and Michelle Reynolds (mcreynolds2@gmail.com) of Nu Zeta chapter at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota will serve as the charter president.

Xi of Texas at the University of Texas - Tyler, was re-chartered during the Texas Leadership Conference last weekend. Advisors will be Ona Tolliver (Ona_Tolliver@uttyler.edu), Director of Student Life and Leadership, and Alpha Omicron at Tyler Junior College alumna Sarah Bowdin (SBowdin@uttyler.edu), Director of Admissions. NEW MICHIGAN COORDINATOR ANNOUNCED

Kari Kahler has recently been selected to serve as the Regional Coordinator for Phi Theta Kappa's Michigan Region. Kari replaces Tom Obee, who has served as the Michigan Regional Coordinator since 1997.

Kari has served as advisor of the Alpha Rho Pi Chapter at Northwestern Michigan College since 1997, and has served as Acting Regional Coordinator since July.

DONATE TO THE RED CROSS TO HELP TSUNAMI VICTIMS IN AMERICAN SAMOA

American Samoa, home to Phi Theta Kappa’s oldest chapter in the South Pacific, was devastated by an earthquake-triggered tsunami on September 29. James Sutherland, longtime Phi Theta Kappa advisor in American Samoa, reports that the college was not damaged. The Alpha Epsilon Mu Chapter was chartered at American Samoa Community College in 1979.

32 PHI THETA KAPPA MEMBERS RECEIVE JEANNETTE RANKIN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Thirty-two Phi Theta Kappa members have received scholarships from the Jeannette Rankin Foundation for 2009.

The Jeannette Rankin Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for, and awarding grants to, low-income women, age 35 and older. Each year the Jeannette Rankin Foundation awards grants to low-income women who have a vision of how their education will benefit themselves, their families, and their communities. Grants are for $2,000, and are typically distributed through the financial aid office, but are not restricted to tuition expenses. Award money can be used for books, supplies, transportation, childcare, or other expenses that will help the recipient achieve her educational goals. Selection is competitive, which means that meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee the receipt of a grant.

Take the Honors Case Study Challenge and compete for cash awards and national recognition. Articles appearing in the print edition of USA TODAY from July 6, 2009, through February 19, 2010, may be used to create a case study based on issues relating to the current Honors Study Topic. The submission deadline is February 26, 2010.
