The night of Rowan's homecoming, Oct. 27, 2007, Farrell was walking with friends when a group of men in a store parking lot on Route 322 asked for directions. As Farrell turned to point behind him, one of the assailants punched him in the face.

After Farrell fell to the ground, another man kicked him. They stole his wallet and fled in a dark car.

Farrell of Boonton died the next day from his injuries.
