If there is one particular image which lends itself perfectly to a flag for the county of Wiltshire, it is the county's defining symbol: the white horse.
In 2006 I set out into the local and regional media to publicize the perfect aptitude of this image for our county's banner, but was disappointed a year later to see that a radically different design had been proposed: Mike Prior's 'Great Bustard' flag displays complicated layers of symbolism on an untraditional field, but omits the white horse. Furthermore, Mr Prior has copyrighted his design, meaning that only he can use or sell it: For him, the county's flag is obviously just a money-making scheme. For these reasons, I fear that his flag will never gain the popularity needed to establish an iconic banner in the public consciousness of a proud Westcountry county.
I therefore continue to propose the White Horse design - which is not truly mine, but rather a natural design offered by the land itself - and ask you to rally to the White Horse flag! Use it, make it, even decorate yourself with it if you will, but spread it far, wide, and proud.
