A Lobby Group Against the York U Strike
On Nov 6th CUPE 3903 decided to strike against York University due to failed negotiations. As a result classes have been suspended, bus routes have been interrupted, businesses are expected to suffer, student educational progress is impeached and more than 50000 lives are fundamentally interrupted.
As a student, I am not sure who I am angrier at. The school for not preventing this strike by giving CUPE 3903 an appropriate settlement or the Union for not revising their demands so they would not need to strike.
In either case, students, faculty, York U itself and the people impacted by this strike cannot afford for this strike to continue to the point where people would be severely hindered by an extended period of academic obstruction and discontinuation.
This group has been created to represent the interests of the more than 50000 people affected by this strike, and to call on them, by any means of conveyance, to resolve this strike as quickly as possible. Our goal is to gain support from students, faculty and hard working Canadians who are impacted by this strike by having them join this group in a show of unwavering support to give them a voice. Even 10000 group support members would be enough to bring this to the attention of the minister of education, John Milloy, and put pressure on him, the government, York U, and CUPE 3903, for intervention and resolution.
Our Requests:
-Speedy resolution of this strike, in the interest of students and community members
-Third party representation by either government or student members, who are the primary victims of this strike
-Compensation to students and community members in the event of a long strike interrupting long term academic plans
-In the event wages are increased for CUPE 3903, then student fees should not increase to compensate for this wage increase, so long as the university has sufficient justification to do so
-drop dates for courses should be extended until all midterm grades are received by students, whenever that may be
- 12% in compensation to all students for the condensed acedemic schedule and the disruption and security in the quality of education at york
Please remember to invite your friends and york community members to build support. thanks.
