When murderers are sentenced judges decide the minimum number of years to be spent in prison before an application for parole can be made.

Judges have to adhere to the minimum-term starting points as set out in the Criminal Justice Act 2003 (Schedule 21). Judges can then increase or decrease the number of years... (read more)

News:
10 November 2009 - Jack Straw has announced that the minimum term for adults convicted of murdering with a knife or other implement will rise from 15 to 25 years - this is very good news, however, we will continue to campaign for this increase to apply for ALL murders, and for a zero-tolerance approach for ALL violent crime.

30 August 2009 - our website has been updated, please visit at http://www.busterknight.net

29 August 2009 - In November 2007 in response to our Murder Sentencing Campaign the Ministry of Justice stated -

"...The Government does not currently plan to increase the minimum starting point of fifteen years for murder..."

We believe that the fifteen years starting point for murder - the most serious of crimes - MUST BE INCREASED TO AT LEAST 25 YEARS.

We continue to campaign for this increase, our Petition to government to increase the number of years murderers spend actually in prison expires on 05 September 2009...

Huge thanks to everyone who has already given their support x

16 June 2009 - Jack Straw has just announced that the sentencing for murder with a knife is to be reviewed to bring it in line with gun murders, this seems to be following the great efforts by the Kinsella family but we have been campaigning for an increase for ALL murders since Buster Knight was fatally stabbed, age just 16 years, in 2006.

This is excellent news but only a review, please contact Jack Straw and demand it actually happens, and for all murders not just those committed with a knife.

Thanks to everyone for your support x

23 October 2008 - some constabularies have been 'miscounting' serious violent crimes.

According to the BBC - "Crimes of "grievous bodily harm with intent" committed between April and June this year were being mistakenly recorded as lesser crimes. When the figures were recounted using the correct classification, the official total showed serious violent crime had risen 22%. "

Jacqui Smith said " the most serious forms of violence have actually in terms of numbers been more than counteracted by the decreases in less serious violence." - a curious view of the situation.

08 October 2008 - the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, is taking a tough stance on knife crime, he said ""Let us repeat this message from the court: Those who carry knives on the streets, and use them to wound and injure, must expect severe punishment. No ifs, no buts, no perhaps.".
