HEY EQUALITY SUPPORTERS!
Can you take a short trip to make history?

In just four days, Mainers will decide whether to take away the rights of thousands to marry. We've never been this close to victory -- but with the polls showing this race dead even, we can't do it without your help. Drive to Portland, Maine for the... final long campaign weekend. We can very possibly provide free overnight accommodations on a first-come, first-served basis!

All you need to do is sign up on our website to drive or rideshare to Maine to help protect marriage equality! http://www.driveforequality.com

If you have questions or concerns, email drive@travelforchange.com.

P.S.-- Can't make it to Maine but want to help from home? Join Call for Equality, our virtual phone bank program, and contact voters from your home or office. All you need is a phone and an internet connection to make a difference. Sign up here: http://protectmaineequality.org/callforequality

Leaves are changing colors and falling off of trees, the weather is getting colder, and it's time for another profeminist men's discussion group!

The topic for this round of discussions will be honesty, dishonesty, and control. We'd like to explore the ways honesty and dishonesty in our communication and presentation ...affects our relationships, discuss whether or how these behaviors are related to a gendered need to control ourselves and others, and consider the effect of what we discuss on the people around us and our society.

Groups will be diverse and purposefully include male-identified folks with various romantic affiliations (queer/straight/bi/gay etc.).

The dates will be October 20, 27, November 3 and 10 (four sequential Tuesdays). Attendees are asked to commit to all 4 meetings in order to build trust and depth in conversations.

The group will meet from 6:30-9PM, location TBD.

If interested, please respond by October 16. We can usually take about 8 people in a discussion section, so RSVP quickly if you're interested!

--

PLEASE NOTE: These groups are open to anyone who is male-identified. Each group meets for four consecutive weeks on the same day of the week with the same participants (please be available all four weeks).

Looking forward to seeing everyone,
Dave, Ben, Matt

Trevor do you folks just completely disacknowledge that there is also sexism AGAINST men rather than advocating for men to support movements that eliminate sexism against other demographics? we are a demographic too...

Hi Trevor, I wont speak 100% for all of us, but I think we acknowledge that there are times when men are absolutely discriminated against on the basis of their sex or gender identity/expression etc. Sometimes our discussions with one another are around these kinds of issues and we try to provide support to each other in any of these kinds of instances.

However, we also recognize that we live in a system of patriarchy- meaning that the systems that exist (government, religion, economic practices, etc.) are predominantly dominated by people with male bodies and often with traditionally male ideologies. This means that the ways in which we live and even the ways in which we approach problems ,often are through a particular framework.

Part of our work is trying to a part of ending these types of systems by alling with like-minded folks- often other feminists (often women identified) who began this work-- but also being aware that within them, that men can be discriminated against. ... Read More

I *think* you meant that men can be discriminated against by women which certainly happens, but statistically and historically, men have much more to fear from discrimination being harmed/beaten/killed/exploited/ etc. by other men. When you study the annals of history, you wont find female dominated social groups making men into slaves, denying them rights to vote, own property, make decisions about their bodies, etc. This has typically been done by sub-groups of men toward other groups. So the other important piece is that men do not all benefit from patriarchy in the same way- which is often a huge contributor to this problem.

Hope this helps you see where we are coming from.

Yes, thanks Jack! and thanks Trevor for the question.

Let's say that I work in an all-female workplace (which I have for most of my life). Let's say those women really hate men, don't promote me, make anti-male jokes and discriminate against men (which has never happened in any of my workplaces, but let's say it has).

That would really suck for me. But it's still not sexism.... Read More

For it to "count" as an "ism," you have to have both the discrimination AND the societal power and privilege. I would have a horrible time at work, but whenever I stepped outside the door of my workplace, I would step back into a society that favors my gender over theirs.

Have a great weekend, folks!

What a year it's been for NOMAS-Boston!

Join us for our Fall Kick-Off and Visioning - to celebrate the past year and the many new connections we've made at:

-our Annual Supply Drive for domestic violence shelters
-Pro-Feminist Men's Discussion Groups (and first ever retreat!)
-BARCC Walk
-Dyke March
-and most recently a prot...est of Tucker Max's film

We've learned throughout the last few years that there are many ways to be a man/masculine and we look forward to exploring our similarities and differences in the coming year. At this Kick-Off we'll brainstorm ideas for ways to build a stronger pro-feminist community in Boston.

One of the primary goals of this event is to get a sense of what new projects the NOMAS-Boston community wants to organize in the coming year (and which annual events we want to continue), and to see who would be willing to step up to help see those projects to completion.

Whether we've seen lots of you lately, it's been awhile since you've been to an event or you've been planning to check us out - come and join us for an afternoon of food, friends, and visioning! ALL GENDERS WELCOMED!

Potluck dishes welcomed by not required.

Check out photos below for a photo year in review!

This NEEDS a response from feminist men and women. I'll be there to protest - who's joining me? (Thanks Ben A-Z for letting us know about this at our retreat.) ~Robbie

Tucker Max Film "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" Opening this Wednesday, Loews Harvard Square, 6:30 PM (meet at 6pm to protest). The film is based on his... real-life experiences, and his writings which include misogynistic material where coercing intoxicated women to have sex is bragged about (the acts he describes meet the legal definition of rape). Stories at: http://www.tuckermax.com and movie details at: http://www.ihopetheyservebeerinhell.com/about/

The film trailer includes sexist and racist lines such as “kill the fat girl,” "fat girls aren't real people," and "you’re saying that Magic Johnson is black and has AIDS, and has it better than me??!!" I also have quotes from the movie that would be inappropriate to post here.

from www.tuckermax.com FAQ...
Don't you think your page is very sexist/anti-women/misogynistic?
This always confuses me. For fucks sake, I originally put up a page dedicated to getting a date; how is that sexist? How in hell does that imply I hate women? I hate a lot of things, (stupid people and Duke basketball, for instance) but nowhere on that list is women. I LOVE women. Now, do I treat some women like shit? Yes, sometimes, but I treat EVERYONE like shit, not just women. Sexism is treating one sex differently from the other(s). I treat people as individuals.

Don't misunderstand, there are times when women just annoy the shit out of me. Of course, I am sure I annoy them also. It's part of the curse of having a high sexual dimorphism within a species: the differences cause friction. And let me be clear about this: I do not believe that women's studies is a legitimate academic discipline. Of course, I don't think many of the majors available are legitimate academic disciplines (see e.g. "Marxist studies," or "Recreation."). And I obviously believe that there are natural, inherent differences between the sexes, differences that go beyond the purely reproductive, and that examination of those differences is fertile ground for humor. If you are one of those who reject the idea of inborn differences between the sexes and claim that all differences are socially constructed, I can offer you nothing but a biology primer and my sympathies, because you are stupid.
