Have you ever wondered what kinds of art careers exist in the museum world? The Summer Institute in Art Museum Studies has the answer! Based at Smith College in Northampton, MA, this six-week, intensive, coeducational program provides you with a one-of-a-kind opportunity to work and study at a premiere college art museum and library, while traveling, developing life-long skills, and working in collaboration on a complete exhibition project.
Extensive travel during the six weeks to art venues throughout New England and New York takes you behind the scenes to meet with museum professionals and learn what they do. Meanwhile, at the Smith College Museum of Art, your class works together to plan and mount an exhibition. Classroom discussions and assignments, site visits, opportunities to “shadow” museum personnel, and practical work at the Smith museum (including the class exhibition and catalogue), all give you a firsthand perspective of the issues confronting museums today.
SIAMS is an investment in your future. Now in its fifth year, the program has provided its participants with a real sense of the possibilities of the museum field, and significant support in realizing professional and academic goals. You will develop a network of contacts to use going forward and will accrue solid experience to add to your résumé. Our graduates are successfully pursuing careers in art museums and related fields or have undertaken specialized training at the graduate level.
Generous tuition assistance, in the form of partial and full scholarships, is available in 2010 for those with need. Further information and application forms are available on the website, www.smith.edu/siams.
