So you thought the pay gap between women and men was a thing of the past? Think again.
Despite it being the 21st Century, men are STILL getting paid 17.2 per cent more than women. This means that the average woman will lose or forgo a massive £300,000 over her lifetime. This pay gap does not only exist in the lower paid job sectors - full-time women earn less than full-time men in EVERY occupation.
I think this is wrong and I want to help change it. This autumn I am launching Theresa May for Equal Pay. Working with TV presenter June Sarpong, we want to help to stamp out the pay gap once and for all.
So how are we going to do it?
This Christmas, we will introduce the Equal Pay and Flexible Working Bill in Parliament. The Bill contains tough new measures which if passed, would help to stamp out the pay gap once and for all. But to make our Bill into law, we need all political parties to vote to for it in parliament.
So how can you help?
If you agree that the pay gap is unfair there are three things you can do to help our campaign
1. JOIN THIS GROUP. As well as legislation I want people to realise that the pay gap still affects women today. So by joining this Group you will be helping to raise awareness of the pay gap and show your support for fair pay.
2. EMAIL YOUR MP. You can ask them to support the Bill and get them to forward your email to the Leader of the House of Lords. It doesn’t matter what Party they belong to because the pay gap is not just a political issue – it is so much bigger than that. There is a standard email in the Posted Items section of the group you could use in your email if you wanted to. To find out who your MP is, click here (http://www.upmystreet.com/commons/l/).
3. WRITE to the Leader of the House of Lords directly, asking her and her Party to support the Fair Play on Women's Pay Bill. the postal address is:
Baroness Royall of Blaisdon
Leader of the House of Lords
House of Lords
London SW1A 0PW
