VIGILS FOR SLAIN LGBT YOUTH
Today, in cities all over the country, the LGBT community and its allies are coming together at vigils to express our sorrow and anger over the brutal murders of two LGBT youth, Jorge Mercado, a 19 year-old out trans woman, and Jason Mattison, a 15 year-old gay teen, that occured in the last two weeks. If you have ever attended a rally for marriage equality, or if you traveled to D.C. to demand equal rights, please make every effort to attend one of these rallies if you live in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago or Dallas and forward this information (see below) to everyone you know. These young men will never have the chance to fall in love and get married.
According to a CNN iReport by Christopher Pagan about Jorge Mercado’s murder: “On November 14 the body of a gay 19 year old was found a few miles away from the town in which he was residing in called Caguas. He was a very well known person in the gay community of Puerto Rico, and very loved. He was found on the site of an isolated road in the city of Cayey, he was partially burned, decapitated, and dismembered, both arms, both legs, and the torso. This has caused a huge reaction from the gay community here, but its a difficult situation. Never in the history of Puerto Rico has a murder been classified as a hate crime. Even though we have to follow federal mandates and laws, many of the laws in which are passed in the USA such as Obama’s new bill, do not always directly get practiced in Puerto Rico. The police agent that is handling this case said on a public televised statement that ‘people who lead this type of lifestyle need to be aware that this will happen’. As If the boy murdered Jorge Steven Lopez was asking to get killed…” [emphasis added]
According to a Baltimore Sun article about Jason Mattison, Jr. a 15 year-old gay boy, “Last week, at his aunt’s house, one of the few occupied homes on a block boarded and sagging, he was found dead – raped, gagged with a pillowcase, stabbed repeatedly in the head and throat, and shoved into an upstairs closet. Jason’s killing left his teachers, classmates and relatives in tears and family members asking questions of one another even in the days leading up to today’s funeral.”
Two of the seven guiding principles of The Power (www.ThePowerOnline.org/about) are “3) Hate is a life or death issue” and “7) The measure of the success of our movement is the impact it has on LGBT youth.” We petition for inclusion of LGBT people in the Civil Rights Act (www.ThePowerOnline.org) because we believe the government must say unambiguously and without equivocation that discrimination againt LGBT people is not permissable. Right now, the message the federal government sends through its laws and political leaders is that while violent crime aganst LGBT people is wrong (see the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Act), discrimination against LGBT in virtually every other context is permissable. Our laws say, “It’s fine if you hate gay people, if you fire gay people, if you throw them out of your bars and restaurants, if you expel them from your universities, if you refuse to acknowledge their families, if you take away their children, and if you teach your children to do the same. Just please don’t draw blood and make a mess.” As long as this message persists, there will always be instances where people let their hate get out of control and where it will turn into violence. This has to stop. We must demand more. If we can’t stand up against hate, we can’t stand up for rights. Please attend and promote these vigils and sign the petition for inclusion in the Civil Rights Act today.

MEDIA ALERT: Press Conference at Historic Stonewall Inn to Announce New LGBT Civil Rights Agenda and Present U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler With Signed Petition from all 50 States.
As President Obama prepares to host a cocktail reception at the White House for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender leaders, prominent activists and fundraisers return to the Stonewall Inn on the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots to announce a new comprehensive LGBT civil rights agenda. At that time they will also present U.S. Congressman Jerrold Nadler with signed petitions from all 50 states and 36 countries supporting expansion of the Civil Rights Act to include LGBT people, marking the official launch of The Power’s nationwide petition drive and campaign demanding full equality now.
The Power (www.thepoweronline.org) is an online organizing network that empowers grassroots and netroots activists from every state in the country and from all over the world to fight for equal rights for LGBT people, not on some arbitrary and convenient schedule created by politicians and lobbyists, but right now.
Speakers will include Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Civil Rights, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, civil rights attorney Liz Abzug (daughter of feminist, anti-war, and LGBT activist and Congresswoman Bella Abzug), former Jerry Falwell ghostwriter and Soulforce founder Rev. Mel White, and others.
WHAT: A press conference convened by The Power (www.ThePowerOnline.org) launching a national movement to pass comprehensive LGBT civil rights legislation.
WHO: Jeffrey H. Campagna, founder of The Power, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, a representative of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, and civil rights attorney and daughter of Congresswoman Bella Abzug, Liz Abzug.
WHEN: 10 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2009, 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots
WHERE: Outside The Stonewall Inn, 53 Christopher St. @ Sheridan Square, New York, NY
WHY: With a self-proclaimed "fierce advocate" of LGBT rights in the White House, and Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, the federal agenda for gay rights does not include full equality. It is time for LGBT people and their allies to seize this historic moment to pass comprehensive civil rights legislation now.
SPEAKER BIOS:
• Jeffrey H. Campagna is the founder The Power. Campagna is also an attorney who has worked in the civil rights bureau of the New York State Attorney General's Office, and a fundraiser for Democratic causes who was on Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama's LGBT steering committees. Happy Gay Pride Month! With just 22 days left until the end of the legislative session in New York (June 22), join the Power in demanding that New York Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith , bring the New York marriage bill to a vote now. You called Ruben Diaz every day for six weeks to make sure Malcolm Smith would be Senate Majority Leader. He owes you bigtime. So call him every day and tell him to bring the bill to a vote.
We've made a video for you to share of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn exhorting the Proposition 8 Day of Decision protesters to stop the Senate from doing any business until marriage in New York is a reality.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_YKGCJz72w&feature=player_embedded
If you do this for the next 22 days, we will have marriage equality in New York by gay pride.
Malcolm Smith's phone number is: (518) 455 - 2701 - put it in your cell phone and call it every chance you get.
NOW is our time.

Cleve Jones on Milk Victories At The Oscars
Harvey Milk's friend and lifelong gay rights activist Cleve Jones, interviewed about Milk's wins at the Academy Awards, says we need to abandon our failed state-by-state strategies and instead follow the lesson of the Civil Rights Act and demand equal protection under federal law. Sign the petition to expand the Civil Rights Act to cover LGBT status at www.ThePowerOnline.org.
Feb. 4, 2009
It has been three weeks since Malcolm Smith became New York's Senate Majority Leader and much has happened since. And there is much that needs to happen.
While in Washington for the inauguration, I had the opportunity to meet Malcolm Smith. He called out through a crowd, "I know you!" More significantly, that means he knows The Power, which is you.
The inauguration of Barack Obama marked a great turning point for this country. But Rick Warren's presence at the inauguration only served to show us that straight politicians, Democrat and Republican, no matter how much they think they are fierce advocates for LGBT rights, continue to allow for the argument that religion is a socially acceptable reason for denying LGBT equality.
With this in mind, The Power launched a petition to expand the Civil Rights Act to declare it the public policy of the United States that discrimination based on LGBT status shall be prohibited in all public accomodations, places of employment, and any program receiving funding from the Federal Government. (see http://www.ThePowerOnline.org). Forty years after Stonewall it is time that the government finally address any issue regarding LGBT rights as a matter of civil rights, not as a debate between religous righteousness and a special interest group.
Shortly after launching the petition, we launched a website (it's just a beginning) so that you can tell people who aren't on Facebook (your mother perhaps?) to join the Power. The URL is http://www.ThePowerOnline.org.
Just over a week later, 4,000 people have signed the petition. If every every person who signs the petition gets one more person to sign the petition in each subsequent week for nine weeks, we will have over 1 million signatures by the time we deliver the petition to Nancy Pelosi. So if you haven't signed the petition yet, do so. And if you have, keep circulating it to more people.
At the same time we've learned from Congressman Anthony Wiener, the Vice Chair of the House LGBT Issues subcommittee, that this idea has been brought up in the committee and that there are members of the committee who favor such omnibus civil rights legislation over the piecemeal approach for which our community has settled over the last 30 years (ENDA, Matthew Shepard, Uniting American Families, DOMA, Don't-Ask-Don't Tell, etc.).
We have a real chance to create a fundamental change in the way this country handles LGBT issues. It's time we stop being afraid and that we stand up, and ask our friends to stand up, and ask our families to stand up, and ask our co-workers to stand up, and assert that civil rights are LGBT rights and LGBT rights are civil rights.
NOW IS OUR TIME.
We are currently laying the groundwork to provide tools and actions for you to help achieve marriage equality in the various states where it is on the legislative agenda and to achieve LGBT equality nationally.
In the meantime, there are some critical things you can do. These small actions take only a little time and can make a world of difference.
1. CAST MEMBERS NEEDED. This Sunday in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we are shooting a video to promote the petition and the Power. We need individuals of all races and all ages who are well-spoken to appear in this video. If you are available for 2-3 hours Sunday afternoon, please respond to this message with your phone number for further details.
2 SIGN THE PETITION. If you haven’t already done so, sign the petition at http://www.ThePowerOnline.org. When prompted, be sure to check the box that says you want to join The Power.
3. INVITE EVERYONE TO SIGN. Tell your friends and family how important it is to you that they support the idea that LGBT rights are civil rights and that they spread the word as you are spreading it to them. If the people you know believe it’s important to you, they will take action.
4. GROW THE GROUP. Continue to invite your friends to join us here on Facebook.

THE POWER calls on Nancy Pelosi to mark Stonewall 40 by expanding the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination against LGBT people
Recognizing that many of the promises President Obama made to advance the cause of LGBT equality can only be advanced by the Congress, today The Power began circulating a petition calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi to lead the 111th Congress to establish that LGBT rights are civil rights once and for all.
The petition, copies of which will be sent to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and the President's LGBT Liason, Brian Bond, will be delivered on June 1, 2009, the first day of the 40th annual gay pride month.
The text of the petition appears below and at http://www.ThePowerOnline.org.
Dear Speaker Pelosi:
We the undersigned call on you and your colleagues to mark this 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the start of the gay liberation movement by passing legislation to expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to declare it the public policy of the United States that discrimination based on LGBT status is prohibited.
For forty years, the LGBT movement has asserted the simple idea that LGBT rights are civil rights. For forty years we have been told to wait our turn and not to rock the boat. But with the election of 2008, we sent a clear message to Washington. Now is our time.
As Michelle Obama said on Gay Pride Day last year, "We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union." We stand united in that struggle and will not accept any effort to roll back the protections of the Civil Rights Act. But we must insist that they be expanded in order for the Act to truly live up to its name.
Because you represent Harvey Milk's district, the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, the nexus of the LGBT community on the West Coast, you have a special role to play in defending and protecting the civil rights of LGBT people everywhere. We hope that you will fulfill that role by passing this legislation.
And to those who say we can't have equal rights now, we say "Yes we can!"
To sign the petition go to: http://www.ThePowerOnline.org.

ON MALCOLM SMITH'S ELECTION AS NEW YORK SENATE MAJORITY LEADER
Malcolm Smith was elected to be New York's new senate majority leader. After months of negotiation, the Democrats united. We can be proud of the fact that no part of the deal involved stopping marriage legislation. Marriage will not come to the floor until we have the votes to pass the bill, and we are still 5-6 votes short. But now we have the opportunity to go after those votes. As this episode has shown, yes we can. Below is a statment I issued earlier today.
We can congratulate Malcolm Smith on his election as Senate Majority Leader after forty years of Republican control of that chamber. The people of New York can be proud that they came together and sent a clear message to our elected leaders that they will not tolerate the use of the LGBT civil rights as a political bargaining chip. The Democrats are to be commended for hearing that message. Malcolm Smith's election means that LGBT people have a chance to achieve marriage equality, where under the Republicans we had none. That said, if the last two months have taught us anything, it's that even within the Democratic Party, there are enemies of equality and others who have yet to join our cause. So this is just the beginning of our fight. We must continue to organize and speak out. But have no doubt, we will prevail.
PASTOR RICK WARREN HAS GOT TO GO - SAY SO AT CHANGE.GOV
The selection of Proposition 8 proponent Pastor Rick Warren to lead the invocation at the inauguration is a slap in the face to the LGBT community and everyone who is committed to the struggle for civil rights. Rick Warren, for those who don’t know, is a prominent evangelical pastor who came out strongly for Proposition 8 and who compared same sex marriage to pedophilia, incest, and polygamy.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/17/obama.warren/index.html#cnnSTCVideo
Tell President-Elect Obama that the choice of speaker who uses religion to divide can not be justified by the politically shrewd word “inclusion.” You can’t have an event about inclusiveness where one of the speakers is a proponent of exclusion. Call on President Elect Obama to replace Warren with a member of the cloth who is not an opponent of LGBT civil rights. There are plenty. If you really want to make a point, suggest internationally prominent (and gay) clergy Bishop Gene Robinson or Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum.
That said:
1. Remember: NOW IS OUR TIME
2. Visit http://change.gov/page/content/contact/ to make your voice heard.
3. Send messages to all your friends including the videos and articles below to inform them about the issue and to convince them that it’s important for them to make their voices heard as well.
4. And as always, please post this action to your profile and put something in your status.
5. Keeping calling Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. and tell him to support the Democratic Majority Leader. It has nothing to do with Rick Warren, but it has everything to do with New York. Don't let him think you've forgotten about him. 718-991-3161.

Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. is furious with you. You've been calling him. A lot. He made a big mistake and said that gays have been flooding his office with calls, so we'd have to wait to see what he would do.

BREAKING NEWS: SMITH ENDS NEGOTIATIONS WITH GANG OF THREE, SAYS CIVIL RIGHTS ARE OFF THE TABLE!
From the legislative Gazette:
The Day In Albany
Smith: Negotiations closed on Senate re-organization
Wednesday Dec 10 11:14 AM
By CHRIS MUELLER
Sen. Malcolm Smith said today that he will cease negotiations on the reorganization of the Senate with the so-called “Gang of Three”.
“We are suspending negotiations, effective immediately, because to do so otherwise would reduce our moral standing and the long-term Senate Democratic commitment to reform and change,” Smith said. “It became very clear to me, over time, that those negotiations started being more about self interest.”
Last week it was reported that Sen.-elect Pedro Espada Jr. of the Bronx, one of the dissident senators, would be the senate majority leader in January. Smith, if supported by the majority of senators, would lead the Senate as president pro tempore. On Monday, however, Espada told The New York Times that he was displeased that Smith would be reducing the power of majority leader, and will not be supporting Smith.
If the three dissident senators, Espada, Sen. Carl Kruger of Brooklyn and Sen. Ruben Diaz Sr. of the Bronx, do not support Smith as the leader of the Senate, he may not be elected to the position. The decision to suspend talks with the three, which Smith said Gov. David A. Paterson supports, could drive them to the Republican side of the aisle, putting the Democrats back in the minority.
“Frankly, we would rather wait two more years to take charge of the Senate than to simply serve the interests of a few,” Smith said.
He also said limiting civil rights of New Yorkers should not be part of the negotiations, but should be part of the legislative process. It was reported that Diaz would not support a Senate leader who would push a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

Late News
Today, the gang of three, rogue Senators Espada, Diaz, and Kruger, negotiated a deal for power with Malcolm Smith that will put Democrats in charge of the Senate.
It will also take marriage equality off the agenda in 2009!
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2008/12/details-of-a-leadership-deal.html
This is unacceptable.
This group will have a name change in the next 24-48 hours to more accurately reflect the cause. When I send that message around, I hope you'll follow the link to the group and join it.
And then FIGHT BACK!
Thursday, December 4, 2008
Is Kruger about to back Smith? Stay tuned... http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2008/12/gang-of-three-holding-summit.html
Monday, December 1, 2008
It’s time to flex your political muscles again. Program the following contact into your cell phone:
Senator Carl Kruger
Democrat, Brooklyn
Phone: (718) 743-8610
Email: kruger@senate.state.ny.us
And just as you did two weeks ago with Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr., email that contact information to everyone you know in New York, everyone you now in the country, and everyone you know on Facebook, MySpace, or Friendster. Post it in every Facebook group. If you have a blog, post it. Post it in your status on Facebook and on Twitter. If you’re part of a wiki, post it there.
And while you’re at it, make sure nobody forgets Senator Diaz’s number – (718) 991-3161.
Then, starting today, start calling Senator Carl Kruger, and make sure everyone you know starts calling. And just as you did with Senator Diaz, in the most polite, respectful, non-argumentative way, I want you to tell whoever answers the phone that you are counting on Senator Kruger to be true to his party, the Democratic Party, and to support Malcolm Smith as Senate Majority Leader. Do not call to ask him to support marriage equality. Just remind him, he is Democrat, and it’s his duty to support the Democratic Majority Leader.
Why? BECAUSE YOU ARE EFFECTIVE.
For two weeks you and thousands upon thousands of marriage equality supporters have called Senator Ruben Diaz, Sr. to tell him the same thing. It appears you’re beginning to have an impact. Read this note for the evolving story of Diaz and Smith: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=37752848556.
Now, without taking the heat off of Senator Diaz, it’s time to focus that attention on Senator Carl Kruger as well and to show him how effective we can be.
Kruger, a Democrat from Brooklyn, another member of the so-called “Gang of Three” is also using his opposition to marriage equality to defend his stance against supporting Malcolm Smith.
In truth, Carl Kruger is just power hungry. The Daily News reported that anti-tenant Kruger may be withholding his vote for Smith in exchange for the chairmanship of the Senate Housing Committee. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/columnists/benjamin/. Following reports last week that Diaz and Smith were close to a truce (http://www.politickerny.com/azipaybarah/790/diaz-and-smith-seal-truce-hugs-turkeys), Majority Leader, Republican Senator Dean Skelos, felt the need to “up the ante” in order to maintain control of the Senate. According to the Daily News, Skelos offered Democratic Senator Carl Kruger of Brooklyn chairmanship of the powerful Finance Committee with an additional $6 million of funding. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/2008/11/27/2008-11-27_dean_skelos_ups_ante_with_gang_of_3_woos.html.
If we can show Senator Kruger how effective we can be in calling his office to tell him to support Malcolm Smith, he might start to think that we’ll be effective in highlighting his anti-tenant positions to his constituents.
No matter what anyone tells you, remember…
NOW is our time.
YES we can.
Continue to invite your friends to join the cause.
