Here is Stephen Green's Story....
Stephen Green is twenty two years old. He has recently been diagnosed with cancer of the blood. The cancer is called Choriocarcinoma. It is very rare that this type of cancer occurs anywhere other than within the placenta. However, it can be found within the testicular area. This cancer is the same kind of cancer that Lance Armstrong had been diagnosed with. The cancer is affecting Stephen's brain, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, lymphnodes, and other areas. This cancer is very rare and aggressive and hard to battle. Recently, Stephen did recieve great news that Great West Life would be covering the cost of the needles that he didn't think would be covered!!! However in saying that we will still be going ahead with fundrasising for the family.
His family is still going through much financial difficulty due to lost wages, travel, unexpected costs. I will describe in more detail.
Recently, Stephen was living in Alberta and when he was diagnosed he flew back to Halifax to be with his family almost immediatly. The cost of the air fare, leaving his work, and only bringing a few clothes has cost the family financial hardship.
The travel from Bridgewater (where his parents live) are costing the family high gas prices. As they come in daily, to bring Stephen or be with him in the hospital.
Stephen's father has been a major support to him and spends the time at the hospital. He has lost many working hours and as a carpenter he does not get paid for not working. This has been a major burden financially without working.
Stephen's girlfriend picked up and left everything in Alberta to be with Stephen through this tough time and has to find a job but be there to support him, and find a place to stay in the Halifax area so they can be close to the hospital.
The family has also expressed some concerns with not knowing about future medical costs. Some drugs are covered, while others are not and there is no way to tell what other financial hardships will come there way in regards to medication.
Right now Stephen is enduring some very intense chemotherapy which is knocking his white blood cells down. He will then be receiving radiation, as his brain tumors look inoperable at this time. The tumors are very close to parts of his brain that would cause serious harm if they were removed surgically.
The family is waiting to hear from the doctor who is speaking to doctor in the U.S. who has done some work with cancer patients of this nature. The family is struggling to make it through day by day. Emotionally, Pscychologically and Physically.
Please let's help make there hurt a little more bearable by relieving the financial stress so they can concentrate on the important things, like each other. Taking one day at a time. Thanks to all members of this group. I will keep you posted.
