- Description:
- International Women's Day takes place on 8 March 2009, and we're organising a festival to celebrate it!
The festival will run from Saturday 7th March to Tuesday 16 March. Events will include a mini film festival at Chapter Arts Centre, political debates, art exhibitions, a Reclaim the Night march, and workshops on topics ranging from climate change to community arts, international women's issues and feminist history.
Before now, IWD events in Cardiff have tended to be quite disparate and unconnected. We thought this was a bit of a shame so we've formed a working group of women's organisations in Cardiff, and are all working together to make IWD '09 a collective festival. We want it to be as open and accessible as possible, and we need you to make this happen! So tell all your friends, get involved and enjoy the festival!
ABOUT US
'We' are a group of Cardiff-based women's community organisations, ranging from domestic violence support services to community arts and political organisations, including:
Wales Women's National Coalition, NFWI, Oxfam Cymru, Women's Arts Association, Women's Workshop, Welsh Women's Aid, YWCA, Wales Assembly of Women, NUS Women's Committee, BAWSO, MEWN Cymru, Cardiff Women's Aid, Cardiff Council, Henna Foundation, Safer Wales, Cardiff Women's Safety Unit and the EHRC.
We have obtained funding from the Welsh Assembly Government and Cardiff Council for the festival.
ABOUT INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
International Women's Day is an official UN day which takes place on 8 March every year. It has been observed since the early 1900s, when gender inequality spurred women to campaign for changes such as better pay, voting rights and equal political representation.
Today, thousands of events are held internationally to inspire women, celebrate their achievements, and campaign for change where it is still needed for gender equality to be realised. Year on year, IWD is increasing in status, with the emphasis being on thinking globally and acting locally to ensure that the future for today's girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
