I plant pansies at the site of homophobia: the self seeding pansies act as a living memorial to this abuse and operate as an antidote to it; some pansies wither whilst others thrive in car park borders and windswept road verges.
Each pansy's location is named after the abuse received titles like “You Fucking Faggot!” and “I think he’s a queer shall we kill him?” reveal the veracity of experience that many people encounter on a daily basis.
I now plant pansies for others who have experienced homophobia and that have been killed or injured as a result of violent attacks. What began as a way to comment on my own experience of homophobia has developed into an ongoing artwork that has been included in festivals in Manchester, London, Liverpool and New York.
This group is intended to enable people to share stories of their experiences, comment on the project, hear about future events and exhibitions.
Most importantly, a place for solidarity!!
