CALL TO ACTION:

On October 16th, the tender went out for the new Children’s Hospital of Saskatchewan, the provincially-funded pediatric facility slated to be built adjacent to Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital. Much to the chagrin of our city’s forward-thinking environmentalists and developers, the tender excludes LEED certification, failing to mention any “green” building specifications at all.
We are urging the WAM community to make a phone call or write a (friendly) letter to the Saskatoon Health Region’s Project Liaison emphasizing this egregious oversight. Some points to consider:

- LEED-standard buildings, though expensive initially, have significantly lower operating costs than non-LEED buildings over the course of their life span. Arguably the hospital could mobilize other "green" organizations--the Sask Green Building Council, for example--to help raise the funds to offset upfront costs.

- LEED buildings have lower GHG emissions and a reduced footprint overall. LEED certification holds buildings to certain standards of human and environmental health-- a priority for a hospital, wouldn't you think?

-If you are considering donating to the hospital, or have done so already, feel free to use this letter, written by a WAM supporter, for ideas:

“I recently made a donation to the Children’s Hospital. I was very surprised to read in the paper that the proposed
hospital will not be built to LEED standards. Isn’t it rather ironic that a hospital built with children’s futures in mind
doesn’t accord with environmental responsibility? Unfortunately, unless this changes, I will not make further donations.”
