MOTORHEAD
Motorhead's Phil Campbell contributes the first track to the New Progressives.
Campbell, who is currently on tour in the USA with Motorhead, recorded guitar last week at his home studio in Wales. Dunnery and Campbell have been friends for over twenty years and Campbell has been an avid supporter of the Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children's Fund since its inception back in 2003. Campbell is also a former House Concert host whose favorite album is The Gulley Flats Boys.
"It's surprising how many musicians who play seriously hard rock music like to listen to The Gulley Flats Boys CD. Most people would expect Phil to vomit at the thought of quiet music but he's an incredibly sensitive and intuitive man. He's also a very tasty guitar player".
Dunnery's new CD is due out in less than four weeks. "I am seriously behind schedule but I will soldier on and see how much progress I can make. I am hoping for the CD to be ready for the House Concert Tour in the UK".
Watch out for Phil Campbell's contribution to Dunnery's New Progressives project in the next few weeks.

Francis Dunnery announces the return of the Tapboard!
Legendary Tapboard guitar to appear on 2009 UK tour
Francis Dunnery has revealed that his 2009 UK tour will see the re-emergence of the legendary Tapboard guitar. After an absence of nearly twenty years, the instrument will appear on Dunnery’s Brand New It Bites’ “New Progressives” tour, which commences in October.
The original Tapboard resulted from Dunnery’s chance discovery of a new playing technique, which involved tapping the guitar frets/strings with both hands, (drawing on his skills as a drummer), turning it into a percussive instrument. Inspired by the results, he approached Dave Farmiloe (current guitar technician at Fender UK) who, at the time, ran his own business constructing and repairing instruments. Farmiloe designed and built the quirky, unique sounding instrument in his own workshop.
“Francis had already got a very nice tapping thing going on with his strat, but he wanted a dedicated instrument,” recalls Farmiloe. “It seemed pointlesscreating the same sounds he already had with the strat, sowe needed tocome up with something new that had the ability to stretch out what was possible. After some wild discussions about the design of the instrument (a sphere with strings on was one suggestion!), it was decided to incorporate double fingerboards, reverse stringing and so on. For the rest,I had a sketchy idea of what to do.Once work started, the Tapboardevolved almost by itself.A single piece of mahogany was used for the body to mount twin scalloped ebony fingerboards, and the design was shaped to fit around hardwaredonatedfrom a clavinetpreviouslybelonging tothe Boomtown Rats. The clavinet partsactually became key to getting a different angle on the sound, and the percussive but articulate nature of tapping. With itsover and under double pickup placement and tuning mechanism, the Tapboard looked a bit odd. Other bits and bobs were made and fitted as necessary, includingbespoke bridgeand controls”.
Over the years, the Tapboard has also become infamous for its piece of chrome shower hose that travels the length of the instrument, with an egg timer at one end! “The shower hose actually provided the solution for cable routing, some electrical shielding and the ability to mess with the wiring without takingthe thingapart”’ explains Farmiloe. “Metal parts were nickel-plated, the body was sprayed black andan engraved plate with the name 'Rose Marie'was added. Ihad great fun making it. The egg timer was added last to help Francis boil a perfectegg for an It Bites breakfast!”
Despite its apparent eccentricities, the Tapboard’s radical capabilities have facilitated runs and chord shapes (using both hands and several fingers/thumbs) that left original It Bites fans stumped on first hearing. So, what can audiences expect from the Tapboard at the Brand New It Bites gigs?
“I don't think I ever fully utilized the true potential of the instrument, so I'm having another go twenty years later” comments Francis Dunnery. “I'm going to break the guitar land speed record and will be performing some of the Tapboard classics as well as some new material!”

NEW PROGRESSIVES OFF TO A FLYING START
Francis Dunnery has begun the first recording sessions for the New Progressives Project.
"I am delighted to have started the New Progressives, I have been waiting for this for quite some time. We started on the It Bites material last night and it was absolutely brilliant although these sessions are really just 'feeler' sessions to see which songs will work in the new format".
The New Progressives Project will be revisiting some of Dunnery's older work with It Bites as well as dipping into some other artists who have featured in Dunnery's record collection over the years.
I asked Dunnery if he thought the new versions of the It Bites songs had the same intensity as the old versions. he replied " There is something about Youthfulness that you simply cannot replicate. In truth, I cannot honestly re produce that early excitement because I'm forty six years old, I don't feel like that anymore. Anyone looking for another version of the early material will be severely disappointed, it's not about that. Each age has a feeling to it and I want to honour the age that I am now rather than pretending I'm the age I was then. ."
He continues "I'm not even going to try to reproduce it because it wont happen. I don't want to embarrass my kids. Running up and down a stage with a 'comb-over and a bald head trying to pretend you have the same excitement at forty six years old that you had when you were twenty one is a little embarrassing. I don't mean that I'm not excited, it's just that I'm not excited in the same way that I was when I was twenty one. None of us are and to pretend that we are is a lie".
Dunnery explains "Many old Rock Stars suffer from this, they try to hang on to their youth and it looks ridiculous. I'm forty six and proud of it. I don't want to be in my twenties, I've done that. I wont be climbing up on the speakers and my foot wont be on the monitor. There are no two fingered devil signs. The emphasis of the New Progressives is playing music, we're not pretending to be the same people we were twenty years ago".
"The New Progressives is a victory flag for all the thirty and forty and fifty and sixty somethings out there who are told on a daily basis that the only valid thing in life is youth. I'm standing up for all the people around my age, I'm going to show everyone that us middle aged people have something that Youth cannot even get close to. If you are in your thirties, forties, fifities and sixties then you are on our team whether you like it or not. We are fighting your fight. The New Progressives is living proof that middle age is deeper, more interesting, more melodic and more musical than Youth. The only thing Youth has on middle age is blind, unconscious excitment. The stuff that makes you want to have sex with everyone without even thinking about it. At least in middle age you think about it".
I asked him if this meant the new versions will be slow and quiet " Ha ha, No, they won't be slow and quiet but they will be appropriate for my age. There are some songs that just don't age well". Dunnery laughs "Singing 'Vampires' (old It Bites song) at forty six will look ridiculous because it is driven by youth, singing Staring at the Whitewash (old It Bites song) can be achieved without sacrificing your dignity. It's a lot easier for Barry Manilow to play his back catalogue with integrity and dignity at sixty five years old than Dee Snider ".
He continues " Bands like 'Kiss' don't mind dressing up in tights at sixty five years old and for three hundred million dollars a year and who can blame them? If I was getting paid three hundred millions dollars a year I would wear a dildo and a horse racing outfit. But with the New Progressives we are going after much more subtle things, we are looking for that magical feeling, that 'other' world that many of us have had glimpses of. If 'Kiss' is the World Wrestling Federation then the New Progressives is the UFC..... If Kiss is Terminator 3 then the New Progressives is "Harold and Maude".
I asked Dunnery what he thought was the difference between the old versions and the new versions of the It Bites songs " I suppose the biggest difference between the old and the new is that in the new versions the songs really come alive, you can really hear the melodies, lots of harmonies. The melodies have become the most prominent feature of the tunes. One of the coolest things we did last night was a version of Genesis 'Back in NYC' with three part harmonies, it was fantastic, very cool and such a beautiful melody".
Dunnery wouldn't tell me any more of the songs they were rehearsing but he did tell me that there will be some videos of the first recording sessions posted on this sight in the next few days. Keep watching for more news.

LET ME INTRODUCE THE BAND
Francis gives us a quick look at the core members of the New Progressives band.
"Hi Everyone, I want to take this opportunity to introduce the core members of my New Progressives Band. Many of you are already aware that I will be having many special guests on the project but I haven't yet introduced the musicians who will be helping me prepare the basic tracks.
I wanted to avoid was the usual 'musicians' interview questions because they are so incredibly boring. You know, the usual, How long have you guys been together? Where did you meet? Tedious beyond belief. I wanted to get a more honest description of their true personalities so I took the liberty of contacting their ex girlfriends and getting them to tell us what the band members are really like. This is what they said."
Jamie Bishop - Bass Guitar
Jamie's ex girlfriend 'Ammo' said - "He's a real sick guy, he does Monkey experiments for the Bulgarian government".
Brett Kull - Guitar, Engineer, Mixer, Wobbleboard
Bretts ex girlfriend Stephen told us - "Oh Brett's not so bad, he's pretty sensitive. I drugged him a lot for sex because he was always kicking and screaming, I sat on top of him most weekends. He was always asking me what had happened the night before".
Paul Ramsey - Drums (is that an instrument?)
We couldn't find anyone who was prepared to admit they dated Paul. One girl did come forward and said that Paul's wife is an Irish Catholic girl and if she found out that Paul had dated anyone before her she would shove a full pack of A3 batteries so far up his ass he would need a taxi to go up and get them out. Paul's arse doctor was not available for comment.
Tom Brislin - Keyboards
Tom's ex girlfriend 'Big June' told us - "He was weird man! This guy is definitely not your average lover. He used to dress up in a Racoon suit that he had purposely sewn a real horses tail on to. He used to scream out during love making "I want them Racoon bitches, I want them Racoon bitches".
Me (Francis) - Singing and Guitar and a few other bits
Just so you wouldn't think I was being unfair, I called one of my ex girlfriends namely 'Giant Brenda of the Catskill Mountains' to see if she remembered me. All she would say is "Don't you speak to me you asshole, you're an asshole, you're a big asshole, you're a stinking low down asshole". I think what Giant Brenda was trying to say was that I was an asshole! Needless to say, I broke into her house and left behind a six foot incredibly angry kangaroo for when she got home.
So there you have it, the real story behind New Progressives. The project is nearly ready for lift off. I'm getting very excited about the whole thing. Keep watching this space for more personal information about the New Progressives.

MOTH VELLUM ONBOARD:
Moth Vellum's Matt Swindells is onboard for the New Progressives Project.
"I first encountered Matt back in 2005 when he sent a song to Aquarian Nation and I absolutely loved it. I thought it was tremendous. For one reason or another we never managed to hook up or work together and I thought nothing more of it. Then, a few weeks ago, my good friend Simon Rogers gave me a CD by a band called MOTH VELLUM and I listened to it on my last UK House Concert tour. The CD is fantastic and I loved the melodies. I looked at the sleeve notes and low and behold there was Matt Swindells! I had to get him for the New progressives because he's extremely creative and also a great drummer. I'm really happy he has agreed to help us out".
Matt Swindells, who hails from England’s Peak District, cut his teeth as a musician on the Manchester music scene. Now residing on the West Coast of the U.S, Matt is drummer and vocalist for MOTH VELLUM, the rising prog rock quintet whose self titled debut album is creating a buzz and receiving glowing revues from the world wide prog community.

DUNNERY WELCOMES JACKSON:
Francis Dunnery is delighted to announce Van Der Graaf Generator Saxophonist David Jackson to the New Progressives.
"Sometimes when I listen to old Genesis tracks like 'Get em out by friday' or 'The return of the giant hogweed' it becomes obvious that Genesis were heavily influenced by Van Der Graaf Generator. It's no surprise to discover Van Der Graaf were the fist band to sign to Charisma Records. I think it would be true to say that Van Der Graaf were very influential to most Prog bands back in the 70's" says Dunnery. "David Jackson is one of the true originals of Progressive rock so you can imagine how delighted I am that he accepted my invitation to take part in the New progressives Project". He continues "I'm looking to represent every generation when we start the project in June or July, from the originals to the newest batch of Prog guys. I have worked with David before and he is absolutely fantastic. A very cool guy and a great sax player. I'm really thrilled that he has come on board".
Jackson also works with physically and mentally disabled people, enabling them to make music through the use of a technology known as Soundbeam. Soundbeam provides an ideal opportunity for adults and children with physical or learning difficulties to experience the joy and sense of empowernment that creating music can achieve.
Tonewall is the name for his idea - and his unique bank of interactive music technology. This features Soundbeams and his own Echo-Mirrors and unique Jellybean Eye. His work is about creating music with groups of people of all levels of ability and even profound disability - and joining them on stage. In 12 years of freelance work, David has taken "non-musicians" into performance with: professional Orchestral and jazz musicians; Caribbean Festivals; with Harpists and Darlecs at Covent Garden; with Bell Ringers at the QEH and with River Dancers at The Point in Dublin. Integration and inclusion - and the challenge of making peoples' own ideas work - are what makes David's music tick.
David Jackson is currently working with Italian prog Band Ossana.

THE NEW BATCH OF PROGGERS:
Francis Dunnery welcomes nineteen year old Luke Machin to the New Progressives.
19 year old Luke Machin will be taking part in the New Progressives project in the summer. “I've seen Luke at my concerts for years and years “ explains Dunnery “ I've gotten to know him really well and his talent as a guitar player is immediately obvious to anyone who has witnessed his skills. He's also one of the coolest kids you could ever meet so he’ll fit right in with all the other cool people I have playing on the project”.
Luke performed at the very first CKDCF charity event when he was only 12 years old and received a standing ovation for his efforts. Dunnery Jokes “ I remember watching him at the side of the stage and thinking ‘I'm gonna beat the shit out of this little bastard when he comes off stage, he's making us all look bad”. He continues “Seriously, working with all the wonderfully talented artists on the New Progressives project will be great experience for Luke. I think it would be fair to say that he represents the new batch of Progressive rock…… but all that aside, after he's done his parts, me and all the other guitar players are still going to beat the shit out of him for making us look bad ”.
Luke owned his first guitar at the age of 2 and hasn't put it down since! Up to this date Luke has competed and won many charity events across the country. Luke was most talented youngster of 2004, 1st in the Rising Stars competition, also the best soloist in Signal 1's Raw Talent competition. Luke was also a finalist in the Ernie Ball Guitar Hero. At the age of 14 he received Grade 8 with distinction in electric guitar from Trinity College London. He has done numerous sessions and has appeared on SM:TV live at the age of 12 featuring as their "Rock Kid". During this time Luke has formed a well established ProgRock band called "Fire Garden" back in Cheshire and fronts his own 5 piece ProgMetal band in Brighton "Concrete Lake". Luke is writing, recording and producing for both his bands albums and his own solo project. This will all be released later this year. Luke currently is taking a BA Hons Degree at Brighton Institute of Modern Music, and just received an award for BIMM Student of the year!

MAKING PROGRESS WITH SIMON ROGERS:
Francis Dunnery is delighted to welcome Simon Rogers into the New Progressives Project.
Simon Rogers is a progressive rock guitarist from South Wales. He currently writes and performs with South West Prog Band Also Eden.
Francis Dunnery was delighted when Simon agreed to contribute to the New Progressives. "There are Prog guys and then there are Prog guys and Simon Rogers is definitely a full blooded Prog guy" Dunnery continued, "I've known Simon for two or three years now and he's a great player. Simon is the guy who amongst other things knows every single tuning and every single song from the Genesis back catalogue so I always love to sit down with him and sing a few tunes. It amazes me that he knows so much stuff with so much intricate detail and we are going to need some of that on the New Progressives project".
Simon Rogers was a guest performer in the USA joining Francis Dunnery onstage during the Tall Blonde Helicopter shows in Harrisburg and New York City. Dunnery jokes "Simons a Scorpio so behind that fifty million dollar Hollywood smile lies the heart of a vampire and I need a bit of that on the New Progressives. We brought him in for his Scorpionic Darkness".
I spoke to Simon Rogers yesterday at his home in Newport, South Wales and he told me "I am absolutely delighted that Francis has invited me in to the New Progressives Project. I have been a massive fan of his work for 25 years, and to be part of this exciting new venture alongside such well known and respected artists is an absolute honor for me. You can guarantee that this project will produce some of the best prog you’re going to hear for a long long time. It’s gonna be killer".
More New Progressives are on the way, watch this space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DUNNERY WELCOMES TRAVIS:
Francis Dunnery has recruited saxophonist Theo Travis to the New Progresssives line up.
"I think it's fantastic that someone like Theo would come and join us on the New Progressives project" enthuses Dunnery "Theo is a major dude! I know his work mostly from David Sylvian, I saw him play live a few times and I thought he was terrific."
The London-based saxophonist and composer Theo Travis has made a name for himself on the British jazz scene for his virtuosity and soulful style as well as his fine compositions. Born in Birmingham, Theo studied classical music at the University of Manchester whilst playing in various jazz and rock bands.
Theo also performs with ambient and progressive rock artists and has performed or recorded with Robert Fripp, David Sylvian, Bill Nelson, Hatfield and the North, Richard Sinclair, Porcupine Tree, Harold Budd, Jah Wobble, the Tangent, John Foxx, Gong, Porcupine Tree, Anja Garbarek, Kangaroo Moon, No Man and Bass Communion.
Although Dunnery is not exactly known for his use of Saxophone or flute, never the less Dunnery has always been a huge fan of the instrument. "I remember listening to Archie Shepp and The Magic of Ju Ju when I was about 10 years old and thinking fucking hell, this guy is incredible. I also loved Pharoah Saunders Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. I thought Wayne Shorter's work on Weather Report's 'A remark you made' was truly beautiful playing so having Theo around is going to broaden the entire scope of the New Progressives project".
Dunnery will continue to add more outstanding artists to the new progressives palette over the next few months so watch this space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DUNNERY WELCOMES MITCHELL:
Francis Dunnery is delighted to announce that John Mitchell will be contributing to the New Progressives Project in the Summer of 2009.
Mitchell replaced Dunnery in the Progressive Rock outfit 'It Bites' and due to his obvious talent has worked along side many wonderful musicians including John Wetton. As well as singing lead vocals and playing guitar for It Bites, Mitchell also fronts his own band 'Kino'.
Dunnery explains " John is a fantastic musician. On recommendation I have been listening to his work closely for the last few weeks and he's a really great player. He'll fit in perfectly with the New Progressives and I'm really over the moon that he has decided to come on board and contribute some energy to the project. I'm really looking forward to working with him in the near future".
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DUNNERY WELCOMES ROTHERY:
Francis Dunnery is delighted to announce Marillion's Steve Rothery will contribute guitar to The New Progressives Summer project.
"I spoke to Rothers via e mail and he said he'd come on board for a song or two so I'm absolutely delighted. I've known Steve and the guys for twenty odd years but I haven't seen them since The Garden of Mystic Lovers video shoot on the Man Tour. It will be nice to see him again. I like Steve a lot, he's a very decent human being and a great guitarist".
I asked Dunnery what sort of guitar he will ask Rothery to play and he explained "Rothers just does his thing doesn't he! I wont ask him to play anything other than his own style. I listened to Marillions latest CD when I was on tour in California and I thought Steve played some very cool stuff. He always plays appropriate and tasteful guitar". Dunnery joked "I need someone like that to offset my shed building!".
The New Progressives project has been rescheduled to begin around May/ June with the release being planned for September 2009 followed by a European and USA Tour. Watch this space for more details.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAKING PROGRESS WITH DAVE MEROS:
SPOCK'S Beard bass player Dave Meros will be joining Francis Dunnery and a host of other fantastic musicians on the New Progressives project.
"Dave's a great player and an Aquarian so at least I know he's smart" says Francis "Obviously I know most of his work from Spock's Beard, I think those guys have done some great stuff over the years. I also checked him out on the Eric Burden stuff and he was great".
Dunnery is currently busy recruiting musicians who he thinks would add to his already exciting new progressives project.
"I know what I am after and I know the people who I need to get it. I will be seeking some assistance over the next few weeks from people who I love and respect. There will be a few surprises in store but Dave was a bit of a 'no brainer' because I know how cool of a player he is. He's a real musician and I'm really looking forward to playing music with him."
Keep watching this space.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAKING PROGRESS WITH JOHN WETTON:
ROCK legend John Wetton will be lending his tremendous talents to the New Progressives Project.
John Wetton will be guesting on Francis Dunnery's New Progressives project due to start mid February. Dunnery is absolutely delighted that Wetton will contribute to the project. Wetton is a long time hero of Francis Dunnery and he has influenced much of Dunnery's work over the last 25 years.
"I remember my sister used to play this 'single' by a band called 'Family' and the song was called Burlesque" recalls Dunnery "Even at the ripe old age of 11, I specifically remember listening to the Bass guitar and thinking that's absolutely brilliant. The bass sound on that song is something to behold, a brilliant bass part and a fantastic sound.".
Dunnery continues " A few years later I bought an LP called 'Return to Fantasy' by a band called Uriah Heep, it was one of the first albums I ever bought and I loved it. Then in 1978 my mind was completely blown by a band called 'UK' who to this day are probably the most innovative and musically spectacular bands of our time. UK is about as good as music gets and I still play those songs. Songs like 'In the Dead of Night, Alaska, Rendezvous 602 and Ceasers Palace Blues..... I mean come on! what more could you possibly need. This is the real stuff".
John Wetton's discography reads like a 'who's who' in rock n roll and he has played with many bands over the years. Family, Roxy Music, King Crimson, Uriah Heep, UK, Wishbone Ash and Asia to name but a few.
"John also has a killer voice" explains Dunnery " His melodies were always sweet and appropriate so I will have to get him singing something if I can persuade him. I just can't wait to start work on this project. I'm deeply excited about the whole thing".
The new Progressives is on schedule to begin around mid February. Dunnery will be inviting other friends and guests to contribute to the project.
