Standing reminder about digitization:
Hey everyone,
Please check out this note from Anne, who is heading an effort to save our precious bound volumes through digitization. Her contact info is attached if you have further questions about how you can help. Yours, Celeste
Greetings Herald alums!
As you may know, the Herald is digitizing our entire paper archive, making Brown's history -- as written in the thousands of pages published since our first issue in 1891 -- publicly available and searchable online. We launched our pilot site over Commencement weekend in May and encourage you to check it out here: http://dl.lib.brown.edu/dbdh/
As the physical bound volumes deteriorate, we're working hard to preserve what we can and raise funds for the rest of the project. We'll be digitizing additional years as quickly as we can raise the money to pay for it. In just a few months, we've raised over 10 percent of the funds needed and nearly a dozen bound volumes are on their way to be scanned and coded for digitization. A digital Herald archive will be a valuable resource for historians and our academic community, and, of course, a way for you to revisit your hours spent at 195 Angell without a trek to College Hill.
Grateful for the formative role the Herald played in our lives, the 117th editorial board and others have made gifts to this project. We hope that, as Herald alums, you might consider similar pledges to support the legacy of a campus institution that, in many ways, shaped your time on College Hill and, perhaps, your paths after graduation. A gift of $5,000 digitizes a full year of the Herald's archive (and can be named for the donor, or in honor of an editorial board), but any amount helps.
Because this project is a joint effort between The Herald and Brown's Center for Digital Initiatives, gifts can be made to the Herald directly or through Brown University. If, for example, you plan to give to Brown, you can specify that your gift be directed toward this project.
As the former senior editor managing the project, I'm happy to answer any and all questions you or interested donors might have. I look forward to hearing from you!
Many thanks,
Anne
