- Description:
- Acting on AIDS is a program started by Christian college students to create awareness and promote activism on the global AIDS pandemic at colleges and universities across the nation. With the support of World Vision, Christian college students have formed a broad network of Acting on AIDS groups on college campuses that seeks to change hearts on campuses, create awareness in communities, and advocate for those affected by the global AIDS pandemic. (As of right now, we are the only high... (read more)

- If you are like me, you are CRAZY BUSY! Because all of us have a ton of other important things to do, our group will not be meeting on a regular basis. However, we will have an Acting on AIDS event monthly.Instead, I am going to be sending a newsletter at least every 2 weeks. (so make sure I have you e-mail address!) (Some events that will take place this year are: Do You See Orange Week?, Broken Bread Meal, Care Giver's Kit Day, Gulu Walk, 30 Hour Famine , and Acting on AIDS Day.) I am so excited about everything God has in store for us this year! Every event will take place in the morning before school, during school lunch hours, or on a weekend when most members of the group can participate. Even if you think you probably can't make it to most of the events, I encourage you to still join the chapter, just for support! (numbers are really important in this ministry!)
The new e-mail address for the AOA Chapter at CHS is: ActingonAIDS@hotmail.com If you have any questions, be sure to e-mail. Thanks everybody!

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EACH EVENT?
“Do you see orange week?”
The goal of the "Do You See Orange?" campaign is to saturate Christian High School with basic awareness of the global AIDS pandemic through a visual representation of the impact AIDS is having on children in sub-Saharan Africa. It will be a terrific way to begin a grassroots campus movement that demonstrates the reality that 1 out of every 20 children in sub-Saharan Africa is orphaned by AIDS. We will create awareness by selling ORPHAN shirts. Because several students already own this shirt, we are assured to have a large number of participants. We will wear the ORPHAN shirt on Friday. Throughout the week, different campaigns will take place. (More information will be presented at a nearer date.)
“Broken Bread Meal”
Through our national day for the Broken Bread Poverty Meal on Tuesday., Oct. 16, we desire to continue to build our national network and create synergy between local, regional, and national groups in this fight against global AIDS and poverty. Tuesday, Oct. 16 is also World Food Day (WFD), which is a worldwide event designed to increase awareness, understanding, and informed, year-round action to alleviate hunger. What better way to commemorate this day than to unite in remembrance and action focused on global poverty and hunger? Hot lunch will not be provided on the day of this event. Instead, students will receive a bowl of porridge for their meal. Students will eat lunch on the floor and view a portion of the movie “Invisible Children”.
“GuluWalk”
The purpose of this event is to inform the community on the crisis taking place in Northern Uganda. Every day, children between the ages of 5-12 are abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army. After being taken to the bush (the guerilla army’s training ground), the children are trained on how to kill people, sometimes physically or sexually abused, and brainwashed with the army’s way of thinking. Every night, thousands upon thousands of children gather in the city of Gulu for safety from the LRA. On average, these children walk 6 miles to get to this sanctuary of safety. We will be walking 6 miles to symbolize the long journey Ugandan children walk every day. (More information is on the way!)
“National Acting on AIDS Day”
On this Friday, our whole school will be engaged in a chapel ceremony committed to raising AIDS awareness. Students will be able to participate in many activities and grow a deeper understanding of the pandemic from this event. (Planning and activities for this event are currently in the making.)
“One Life’s The Journey”
I believe this event can change lives! During this event, our students will pretend as though they are living the life of a 3rd world country child in Africa. Students will be tested with many trials. Some students will be diagnosed with AIDS, others will be orphaned due to the disease, several will die from the illness, and few will remain unharmed. We will walk to different locations during the night and learn untold stories from the lives of real children. I don’t want to give too much about this event away because I want it to be a surprise.
“Care Giver’s Assembly Kit Day”
The point of this experience is to assemble care packages for nurses and missionaries in Africa. The supplies these volunteers should be equipped with are scarcely available. At times, the items in these basic kits, can be the difference between comfort and pain for the victims. All students may participate in collecting the supplies, however the event will take place during a senior high lunch. A supplies list will be distributed at a further date and more information on the event overall will be handed out.
“Stigma Project”
A member of the national Acting on AIDS team will possibly host an event for all of us to attend. If this event takes place, we are going to try to get other schools involved in the activity.
“30 Hour Famine”
Students will not eat for exactly 30 hours to reveal the truth that many children are starving around the globe. After the time period is over, we will have a big celebration and rejoice over what God has done through this event. Students will serve others during their fast. (Some will serve at a soup kitchen. Others may collect food for Sunshine Missions. Another group will ask people to sign petitions. These are only ideas of the types of service students will engage in.)
Thanks everybody!
