Well, Vulcan's long and colourful journey that started in September 2007 with our ambitious quest to host the premiere of the new Star Trek movie came to a spectacular and memorable end last evening, as Paramount Pictures arranged for a special advance screening of Star Trek for 300 lucky Vulcan Guests.
It was Vulcan's red carpet moment, and our brush with Hollywood Glamour as we welcomed actor Bruce Greenwood to the event, and were met by a wall of media flashbulbs and microphones.
I am so excited to report that in my mind, the new Star Trek movie did not disappoint! It was funny, action packed and suspenseful. The cast fit, and reinvented their well recognized roles very well, and Star Trek is reborn.
Thank you so much to Paramount Pictures for arranging last night's special event, and thank you for entertaining Vulcan's lofty goal to premiere of this wonderful new movie.
Star Trek is back - revived and fresh, and the Town of Vulcan, Alberta is proud to be recognized by so many fans as a fun, if not quirky Star Trek destination, in the middle of the Canadian Prairies, 1 hour south of Calgary and 1 hour north of Lethbridge.

VULCAN TOURISM NEWS - Bruce Greenwood "beaming in" to Calgary for Vulcan, AB's special screening of Star Trek - Vulcans are thrilled!

Approaching the eve of the new Star Trek movie’s launch in North America, the little town of Vulcan, Alberta is buzzing with excitement! Not only has Paramount Pictures arranged for 300 lucky Vulcan County residents to attend a private advance screening of Star Trek, they have also just announced that Captain Christopher Pike himself, aka Bruce Greenwood, will be making an extra special guest appearance at Vulcan’s advance screening in Calgary on May 6, 2009.
"With Bruce Greenwood adding some Hollywood glamour to Vulcan's special advance screening of Star Trek, we feel very honoured by all that Paramount Pictures is arranging for us." said Vulcan Tourism Coordinator, Dayna Dickens.
Canadian born actor Bruce Greenwood has had a diverse and successful career in film and television, appearing in such movies as, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets”, "I'm Not There", "Capote", "I, Robot", "Thirteen Days" and "Double Jeopardy" just to name a few. Additionally, Greenwood has worked with Canadian director Atom Agoyan three times, on; "Exotica", "The Sweet Hereafter" and "Ararat".
As Star Trek's theatrical release date approaches (on May 8, 2009), Dickens, is noticing a significant increase in the number of Star Trek fans making the trek to Vulcan:
"Just about every tourist who walks through our doors this spring is curious about Star Trek, and when we show them the new movie's trailer you can see the excitement build in their eyes."
Vulcan, Alberta has been coincidentally associated with Star Trek since the show's inception - Vulcan being Mr. Spock's fictitious home planet. The small town on the Canadian Prairies actively promotes itself as a Star Trek destination, complete with a space-themed tourist information centre and a 5 tonne replica of the USS Entreprise proudly overlooking the highway through town.
Upon learning of Paramount’s special arrangement for Vulcan, Leonard Nimoy said: "I wish I could be in two places at once. I will be in NY helping to spread the word about the opening of the film. I am pleased that logic has prevailed and that my Vulcan friends will see the film in Calgary. Live long, enjoy, and prosper."

VULCAN TOURISM NEWS: Mr. Spock Phoned “Home” and Paramount Pictures heard the call!

Following our long and very popular campaign, we have finally received an answer about hosting the premiere of Star Trek from Paramount…. It’s not what we asked for, but it’s definitely NOT bad news.

Last month, Paramount Pictures finally replied that the Star Trek XI Movie premiere could not happen in Vulcan, due to the timing and logistics required to make the event happen. We required too much lead time in order to secure the services of event contractors and equipment rentals. The Movie industry works on much shorter timelines, and couldn’t commit as early as we needed to know. The answer could possibly have been different had we had the appropriate infrastructure in place (i.e. a movie theatre).

As a result of this announcement being made public, on Thursday March 19, 2009, Mr. Spock himself (Leonard Nimoy) telephoned the Vulcan Tourism & Trek Station to voice his disappointment at the news from Paramount, and to lend his support to our movie premiere campaign.

Following a MASSIVE wave of publicity, Paramount Pictures again contacted Vulcan Tourism and offered a compromise opportunity. It is offering the town of Vulcan and Vulcan County a total of 300 seats to a private advance screening of Star Trek at a theatre in Calgary. Tickets will be made available, by lottery, exclusively to Vulcan County residents. Lottery ballots can be picked up, with no purchase necessary, at various local businesses starting April 17.

Each lottery prize will consist of:
- 2 tickets to attend the private advanced screening of Star Trek at the Cineplex Theatre at Chinook Centre in Calgary on Wednesday May 6, 2009

- Return bus transportation between Vulcan and Calgary

- Refreshments (Popcorn and soda)

- Special Star Trek memorabilia

The contest will be open to Vulcan County residents aged 13 or older. Under 18 must have signed consent of a parent or guardian to enter the contest. Contest winners under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult to attend the screening. The contest draw date will be Wednesday April 29, 2009, and winners will be contacted by phone or email. One prize per person.

Upon learning of Paramount’s special arrangement for Vulcan, Leonard Nimoy said: “I have been informed of the logical plan that Paramount Pictures and the town of Vulcan have been working on to host an advanced screening of Star Trek. The people of Vulcan have been heard and, although it is atypical for Vulcans, they are, in fact, excited. To all, live long and prosper.”

Alberta Star Trek fans who reside outside of Vulcan, will be able to listen, watch or read for their chance to enter-to-win advance screening passes to Star Trek on May 6 in Calgary and Edmonton. We will post where you can listen, read and watch to win as soon as we receive more information from Paramount Pictures.

WOW!!!
What a roller coaster ride we have been on for the last couple of days!

YES! Mr. Spock contacted us directly!

YES! He wanted to voice his support for the town of Vulcan's Star Trek quest!!!! and

YES! Vulcan has been having a FANTASTIC dialogue with Paramount Pictures about the new movie.

It is true that STAR TREK will not be opening in the town of Vulcan; however this is due to the fact that Vulcan does not have a movie theatre. The timing and logistics required to make such a large scale event take place given our town's limited infrastructure simply do not make it logical to do a first run screening of the film here.

However, we are now working together with Paramount Pictures to come up with an alternative plan that we are very excited about.
Stay tuned, and we will announce details of this in the coming days.

Here are a couple of clips of the recent news:

At long last, we have finally received an answer from Paramount Pictures, about our quest to host the movie premiere of Star Trek.

There is good news and bad news:

Bad news first: Unfortunately, due to timing and logistics surrounding the production and release details for the film, it will not be possible for the premiere to happen in Vulcan. This is largely due to the lead time that we require to rent and special order the equipment needed to put on the event (i.e. projector, screen, sound system etc); and the much shorter timelines the movie industry works with, surrounding film releases.

The Good news is that Paramount Pictures does want to involve Vulcan Tourism with the release of the film in Alberta. Although it is premature to know specific details, they have informed us that we will be invited to participate in the promo-screening of the film in Calgary. This screening will likely will be scheduled for a day or two prior to the film’s wide release on May 8.

Although this may seem, on the surface, to be the end of a long and colourful journey for the Town of Vulcan, we are thrilled with the results of our efforts:

* The support you have shown Vulcan for our lofty Hollywood goal has been overwhelming;

* The media’s response to this campaign has been remarkable; and,

* The idea has clearly caught the imaginations of the travelling public, as our visitor statistics continue to hold strong.

We are looking forward to seeing what Paramount Pictures has in mind to include Vulcan in its plans surrounding Star Trek’s release in May.

Even though Star Trek won't be premiereing in Vulcan this spring, we are still looking forward to a fun and busy year:

* The Town of Vulcan is currently in negotiations with CBS to become an officially licensed Star Trek destination;

* We have put in an application to the Guinness Book of Records to have the “Most people in one location doing a Klingon Bat’leth military-style drill” at our annual Spock Days/Galaxyfest this coming June;

* The Town of Vulcan will be bracing for a Klingon Invasion, as KAG Kanada members descend on Vulcan to celebrate their 20th Anniversary as a fan club at this year's Spock Days/Galaxyfest weekend.

* The Canadian Space Agency and NASA is considering doing a downlink video conference between our local high school and Canadian Astronaut Robert Thirsk, live from the International Space Station in September (an event that will be open to the public).

If you would like to stay in touch with all of the goings on in Vulcan, we invite you to join our other Facebook group: "Trekking to Vulcan, Alberta"

or ask to be put on our mailing list by contacting: info@vulcantourism.com

Welcome to September all you Trekkie and Trekker group members! We hope you had a fun and prosperous summer, in whatever corner of the galaxy you are from....
In case you have not yet heard, we have finally found a company who can get us a 35mm film projector, which means Vulcan has overcome a significant hurdle in its quest to host the World Premiere of Star Trek XI. Now that September is here, we are getting ready to kick start our campaign to host the premiere here next spring. We want to get as many people talking about us as possible, so please invite everyone you know to join this group and spread the word... Help us bring Mr. Spock and Star Trek XI home to Vulcan, Alberta in May 2009!!!

happy summer everyone,
did you see that Vulcan's Spock Days/Galaxyfest weekend (and our quest to host the Star Trek XI premiere) made it onto CNN and CTV National News in June?
AMAZING NEWS!!!

Hi Group Members!
We wanted to update you on our latest plan to generate publicity for the Town of Vulcan. Our hope is that the more the media notices us, the better our chances will be to host the premiere of the new Star Trek Movie in May 2009.

SO - as some of you may be aware, June 13-15, 2008 is our 15th Annual SPock Days/Galaxyfest community wide Star Trek Celebration (aka VulCON 15).
This year, we very excited to announce that we will be hosting a group of SKYDIVERS we are affectionately calling: "THE FLYING TREKKIES". On Friday evening, June 13 and Saturday morning, June 14, The Flying Trekkies will be jumping into Vulcan, right in front of the Tourism & Trek Station dressed as STAR TREK CHARACTERS!! We will be inviting media from all around to cover this fun skydiving event. If you are anywhere in our neighbourhood that weekend, be sure to stop by to watch, and to show your support for our Movie Premiere Campaign!

March 11, 2008
Hi Everyone!
We have been having an AMAZING couple of days in Vulcan, as word of our campaign to host the Premiere of Star Trek XI has been picked up by some major media outlets!
Here is a brief list of places that have picked up our story since last week:
CTV News Calgary, Canada AM, AFP (Agence France Presse) resulting in articles published in:
The New York Times, The China Post, The Kuwait TImes, Haaba.com (Africa), iafrica.com, The Brunei Times, Yahoo News - Brasil, Malaysia, Indonesia, Phillipines, Singapore
Alta Vista, Weyak (Middle East), CBC Radio - Q, Le Monde - France, Inquirer.net, the wire.com, bnet.com, Space Travel.com, Extreme Mortman, thewishfulthinker.com, france 24.com, breitbart.com
and.... we just got off the phone with someone from Entertainment Weekly in New York City!!
Paramount Canada contacted us yesterday morning to acknowledge they are aware of this new wave of publicity, and asked us a couple more questions about Vulcan.
We are very excited about this latest wave of publicity, because we believe that the more people who hear about Vulcan's quest for the premiere, the better our chances are to actually making it happen here!
Please invite all of your friends to join this group to show their support for this fun and ambitious idea!

February 14, 2008 - UPDATE:
Happy Valentine's Day!
This morning we received an email from our contact at Paramount, informing us that Star Trek XI's release date has been pushed back to May 2009.
This news does not impact Vulcan's proposal to host the premiere - it does, however, mean we would be able to plan an even bigger, community-wide event, without the same risk of a December snowstorm to hamper the festivities.
Stay tuned - spread the word, and keep your fingers crossed.
We will keep you posted as things develop.

February 2008
We have some exciting and promising news to update you with:
On Tuesday morning (Feb 12), Dayna was invited to participate in a conference call with Executives from Paramount Pictures – Canada. We are happy to report that Vulcan's movie premiere proposal has been well received.
Although it is too soon to know if the premiere will happen in Vulcan, the Paramount officials Dayna spoke with indicated that they like the idea and, they will be contacting their offices in the US about it. In a nutshell - our proposal is being discussed and considered!!!!
Needless to say we are thrilled with this development, and of course will keep you posted as we learn more.
In the meantime, because we now know that Paramount is watching, AND because the premiere's coming to Vulcan is not yet a "done deal", we encourage you to invite all to your friends to join our Facebook group to show your support for Vulcan's goal to host the premiere of Star Trek XI in December 2008.

January 2008 -
Well - winter is here, and with it our planning and dreaming and scheming continues...
In the interests of international/intergalactic cooperation, we have approached the communities of Riverside, Iowa and Linlithgow, Scotland, (future birthplaces of Captain Kirk and Mr. Scott respectively,) to join us in our movie premiere campaign.
So far, our invitations have been warmly received by those communities, and we hope that we can begin working with them to lure the Star Trek XI premiere into each of our back yards - Why not try for this: Vulcan, Alberta to host the Canadian Premiere; Riverside, Iowa the US premiere; and Linlithgow, Scotland the European premiere.
Our hope is that by joining forces with these other communities, we will have a louder voice that just might be heard by the powers that be at Starfleet Headquarters... I mean Paramount Pictures.

Stay tuned to future postings, and please ask all of your friends to join this group to keep the support growing.

December 2007 - Happy Holidays Everyone!
Sorry for the lack of updates - Just a quick note to let you know, we have not abandoned our campaign to try to bring the new Star Trek Movie Premiere to Vulcan.
So far we have yet to hear back from anyone about our proposal, but we have not lost hope, and have a plan in place to try to capture the film promoters imaginations.
Stay tuned in the new year, as we will be posting elements of our proposals and related news updates online as they come about.
Best wishes to everyone for a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year!

October 31, 2007 -
Happy Halloween Everyone!
We just returned from a busy weekend of meetings and workshops at the Travel Alberta Industry Conference in Banff, and are feeling a little sleep deprived today!
We are excited to report that our Movie Premiere Proposal is on its way to Los Angeles this week, and we are looking forward to hearing how it is received.
Keep your eye on the video section of this group - we will post our proposal online in a couple of weeks.
Meanwhile, we are thrilled to see that this group's membership is approaching 725 members in 6 short weeks.
Thank you to everyone for your enthusiastic support - please keep inviting all of your friends to join up as well.
