The Penn State Icers have a proud tradition, winning seven ACHA National Championships since being established in 1971. The team made ten consecutive apperances in the ACHA National Final between 1998 and 2007, winning five, including four straight from 2000-2003. Before 2008, Penn State had not finished worse than 3rd in the National Tournament since 1994.
Not to be confused with a club sport, the Icers fall under the leadership of the Team Sports office; it is an elevation that allows the Icers many of the same benefits and facilities as varsity sports such as football, and allows the team to garner greater exposure.
The Icers are one of the original members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, which began play for the 1991-92 season. Penn State began play in the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League in 2007, along with Delaware, Drexel, Navy, Rhode Island, and Scranton. They won the inaugural league title with a 20-2-0 record.
