IF we ever are going to achieve equality in Manhattan we have to get commissioners elected who support including sexual orientation and gender identity/expression to the City anti-discrimination ordinance.
Citizens for a Better Manhattan will be conducting interviews with commission candidates at the Manhattan Public Library Auditorium at
the following dates and times:
Fri., 02/20 - Tom Phillips, 6:00 pm
Sat., 02/21 - Vincent Tracey, 10:00 am
Sat., 02/21 - Mark Hatesohl, 11:15 am
Mon., 02/23 - Jim Sherow, 5:45 pm
Mon., 02/23 - Debbie Nuss, 7:00 pm
Fri., 02/27 - David Cook, 6:00 pm
Each interview usually takes about 45 minutes to conduct.
I strongly encourage people to attend this sessions. It is important to show that LGBTs are interested in local government and make our presence felt at these interviews. I would encourage people who are comfortable to go up to each candidate and say: "I'm (name) a LGBT member of the Manhattan community and I am going to vote on April 7th based on your answer to CBM's question on changing the City's non-discrimination ordinance to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender expression/identity."
All we need is a couple of people at each interview to do this and our presence would be felt. Mark Hatesohl is extremely homophobic and Tom Phillips isn't much better. I think having 20 of us at their interviews would be a great statement.
Two Commissioner candidates have already been interviewed: Loren Pepperd is opposed to amending the ordinance and think there are "too many ordinances" to begin with. Jayme Morris-Hardeman is in favor of amending the ordinance and is a strong ally to the LGBT community.
