The Gill Tract is a 14-acre agriculture research property donated to UC Berkeley by the Gill family of farmers. It's currently slated for development into baseball diamonds and retail centers even though it's the last Class 1 agricultural soil in the East Bay.
UC Berkeley students, faculty, local food businesses, and non-profits are banding together to save the Gill Tract from development. We hope to make it into the world's Institute for Sustainable Urban Agriculture.
Our plans include converting hardscape into research laboratories and greenhouses and softscape into an urban farm. We'd like to invite the community to help tend and harvest, and learn about urban agriculture (similar to Pie Ranch in Pescadero). We would also spread research findings throughout the world through Extension.
Professors Miguel Altieri, Ignacio Chapella, Kimberley Stryker, and Michael Pollan as well as several sustainable restaurants and non-profits are supporting our efforts. Please invite your friends, professors, favorite food establishments, and colleagues to join us.
Thank you for your support!
