July 11th has been proclaimed an official Day of Commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide by the European Parliament.

The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with 556 votes for, 9 against, and 22 abstentions, and will apply to all the countries of the European Union.

The European Parliament resolution called the Srebrenica Genocide "the biggest war crime in Europe since the end of WWII" and "a symbol of the international community’s impotence to intervene and protect civilians."

Among other things, the resolution affirms that over 8,000 people were executed by "Bosnian Serb forces commanded by General Mladic and by paramilitary units, including Serbian irregular police units, which had entered Bosnian territory from Serbia."

Milorad Dodik, Prime Minister of Bosnia's Serb-majority entity, Republika Srpska, has referred to the resolution as "incorrect and unacceptable."

The remains of at least 362 Srebrenica victims were discovered last week at a mass grave near Kamenica, a village just east of Srebrenica. This is the 10th such mass grave to be found in Kamenica, in an area now called "Death Valley," where some 3,370 bodies have already been found.

The bodies were found in a secondary grave, meaning that they had been killed, buried, and then dug up and re-buried at a second location to try and cover up evidence of the crime.

Of the over 8,000 innocent people killed in Srebrenica, over 5,000 bodies have been recovered and identified.

The remains of thousands of victims have still not been recovered. Over 3,000 body bags remain at the headquarters of the International Commission for Missing Persons (ICMP) in Tuzla, BiH, awaiting DNA analysis and identification.

The number of participants in this year's anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide is estimated at 30-40,000.
