- ADFED 2007/08 Programmes include:
1. There Aint No Black in the Union Jack (TANB) – Inspired by Paul Gilroy's book of the same title, to explore notions of Identity and politics through music, visuals and movement/theatre. This programme involves working with 10 groups of young people, aged 14-25, from 9 London Boroughs, to create performance work around re-imagining a ‘new flag’ and a ‘new anthem’ to represent themselves. This will be contrasted with the use of the Union Jack and feelings of how representative its iconography is today, as well as exploring the relevance of the national anthem as a representative piece of music for new citizens of Britain today.
Resulting performances will be presented locally for their communities and merged into a joint piece of work.
ADFED will lead on all music related work in collaboration with Pan International Arts to deliver a series of phases over 1 year. These include:
Cultural Leadership Programme (6 months) – This programme will train 20 young leaders, from 9 boroughs, to conduct their own projects around the themes and issues of TANB.
Currently all Leadership programmes take place in ADFED’s space, at Rich Mix.
Residencies – Young leaders lead their own programme in a chosen artform to devise a piece of music/theatre/visual art piece based on the ideas explored in the Cultural weekend. Currently music is the main chosen art form for most of the groups. ADFED is leading on all music production and sessions that relate to this throughout summer 2007 – April 2008.
Cultural Visits - These are arranged once a month in line with the Cultural Leadership weekends. Throughout the project, cultural visits to art exhibitions/music events/gigs etc are arranged, to mirror the themes and ideas of this project, in order for the Young Leaders Group to have a rounded picture of the project, in line with what is happening on a professional artistic level during this time. These also include visits to relevant organisations and/or projects.
ADFED and Pan are working hard to foster more meaningful relationships with these organisations/projects for further development of TANB and in relation to projects that may branch off from this.
Resource Pack – This includes: notes, articles, resources, reading/listening lists relating to sessions and project that will develop in Chapters. The eventual resource will have 13 Chapters. There is an aspiration to publish this as part of the legacy of this project.
Peer Mentoring – ADFED supports all young leaders and their groups in a co-led peer mentoring programme that further supports new members to the overall aims and objectives of the TANB programme.
2. Aspire – Jan-March 08:
Working in partnership with Toynbee Hall and local schools on an innovative modular programme spanning citizenship, the arts and the outdoors, as well as an innovative mentor coaching model. ADFED will work with Toynbee closely to contribute to the overall direction of the programme.
The Aspire Project will impact the lives of 150 young people over three years, starting in the academic year 2007-08.
ADFED is supporting the ‘Express’ module, as part of this project, which will formulate part of an Arts Award accreditation. Along with Cardboard citizens, the project will culminate into an end of module showcase.
