A 'grassroots regeneration' movement.

If you have a project that needs a building or a building that needs a project, you can post it to the project wall.

But, you know, people probably don't check Facebook walls that regularly these days ...

Hello

Early in 2009, Charlie Davies and Matt Weston started Slack Space Brighton (this fb group).

The point is/ was about putting projects into empty buildings (and having everybody happy about it). But also about a move to a more flexible 'space economy' - the way in which a space is talked about, how we describe it and define it (who owns it, who can use it, how easy it is to give it to someone else, how easy it is to change the use of the space). We ran four events, then Charlie moved to... (read more)

Facebook mail sent to the group on 27th May 2010:

Hello,

"One of the key management challenges of a slow project is remembering that you're doing it" - Russell Davies.

I'm suddenly getting a lot of email (through to makeroomnow@gmail.com) and it's totally fine to send me stuff. But I thought it would be helpful to give a little clarity on what Slack Space Brighton is and isn't...... just in the interests of me not getting in the way.

Isn't:
- a big infrastructure organisation. Or an organisation at all
- about squatting

Is:
- a tiny movement
- about using empty space in Brighton and everybody being happy about it (landlords, locals, etc)
- also about a move to a more flexible 'space economy' - the way in which a space is talked about, how we describe it and define it (who owns it, who can use it, how easy it is to give it to someone else, how easy it is to change the use of the space)
- a simple Facebook group where the wall is there to be used as a 'projects wall' - if you have a project that needs a space or a space that needs a project, you can post it up
- a series of events. We'll keep organising meetings until we run out of batteries/ ideas (six so far)......
- copiable to any city. Go on. Copy it. Eg. I've just spent three days in Hoxton working with Meanwhile CIC (funded by the Dep't of Communities and Local Gvt) to set a kind of Hoxton movement running there
- about any kind of unused or underused space: not just empty shops. So it includes making use of empty desks, noticeboards, lampposts, on-hold building sites, shadow space underneath bridges, etc., etc.

PS. Graeme Walker and I are planning a Slack Space Film Night at Coachwerks in June or July. Will probably include this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2GfOhFZkY8 - any other related suggestions very welcome.

- Matt
