Description:
South London needs more trains.

Even if you haven’t heard of the South London Line (SLL) you may well have travelled on it. It's the line which has trains running every half hour between Victoria and London Bridge via Battersea Park, Wandsworth Rd, Clapham High Street, Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye, Queens Rd Peckham and South Bermondsey. It makes a neat U shape through the north part of Lambeth and Southwark and we particularly value it because, unlike long distance services, its possible to... (read more)

News:
London TravelWatch has issued (10.09.2009) the results of its passenger survey on the South London Line, which shows 88% of South London Line users will suffer “very considerably” if the service is axed.

Sharon Grant, Chair of the official watchdog organization representing the interests of transport users in and around the capital, said that this will result in “thousands of angry passengers with significantly longer journey times and inconvenient interchanges for many passengers and a very real risk of overcrowding on other rail services, local buses and on the already busy Northern and Victoria tube lines.”

London TravelWatch commissioned a passenger survey conducted at key stations on the route, on trains and online, to measure the usage of the line and the likely impact on passengers as a result of these changes.

The community campaign coordinating group met on Monday at City Hall are we are determined to Save Our Line and to get TfL and the DfT to look again at the proposed withdrawal of services into Victoria and London Bridge. It is now clear from the research that the South London Line is an essential part of South London’s transport infrastructure, is an essential service to its users, and it is absolutely vital that it is kept.

The study puts the additional annual cost of longer journey times many people would have to make at as much as £4 million a year. The study provides clear evidence that Mayor Johnsons “cost savings” of £2.4 million a year due to axing the line are in fact very poor value for money and it remains unclear why TfL and DfT would seek to cut services, add to carbon emissions and severely disadvantage South Londoners.
