This group is for any user of a WIFI enabled device not compatible with the VPN Client used at every PSU campus. Penn State uses a Cisco Systems VPN that is a limiting device for mobile users of such devices as the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
If Penn State were to base their User Authentication out of a web-browser, or use more universal VPN settings, students would be able to access services such as Facebook, Youtube, Skype, and Bebo on campus with mobile devices.
Studies have shown that while roughly 80% of Penn State Students own Laptop Computers, only 20% use them on campus. WIFI Enabled mobile devices (cell phones, mp3 players, PDAs) are starting to gain momentum in the market and it is only a matter of time before the standard user has WIFI on a Cellular Phone. These devices could serve as a viable replacement to bringing a laptop to campus.
If Penn State continues to use the VPN (albeit a working solution) and we do not attempt to invoke change, none of us will be able to access content requiring faster connections (than 3G, EDGE, EVDO etc.) on a mobile device.
Let this Group serve as a community for change. Penn State Students did a wonderful job of banding together to stop the University from making Football Ticket Sales random. Now is the time to come together and shed light on an issue that is sure to become prevalent in the future.
