World Pneumonia Day
Information

Organizations - Non-Profit Organizations
Description:
Over two million children die from pneumonia each year, accounting for almost 1 out of 5 children under-five deaths worldwide. Many of these deaths can be prevented with inexpensive antibiotic treatments for as little as $0.30. We should strive to prevent children under 5 from developing pneumonia in the first place, by giving vaccines, better nutrition and reducing risk factors.

This year will mark the WORLD'S FIRST PNEUMONIA DAY. It will take place on November 2.

News:
November 2 is the world's first world pneumonia day. Many of us will do what we normally do that day. We will wake up and go to work or go to class or go shopping. Most people we come in contact with won't be thinking about pneumonia or the two million children under the age of five who die from pneumonia every year. The reason is simple: pneumonia is simply ignored by everyone because...well, because...well, there must be a good reason...oh that's right, it's difficult to spell.

We tried to come up with a painless (and free!) way to communicate that we must pay attention to these preventable deaths. What we came up with is a world-wide blue jean day. The reason is simple: Children who are dying of pneumonia turn blue because they can't breathe.

Now we need your help. Please mark that you are attending the "Wear Blue Jeans on World Pneumonia Day" event on facebook http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=86891672112

If you have already rsvp'd you are attending, please invite all of your friends to join the event. If you already invited all your facebook friends then please ask your boss, supervisor, principal or teacher tomorrow to commit to have a world pneumonia day blue jeans event at your office or school. You are only going to be asking them to do something they already do with something they already have.

Please start the conversation tomorrow and make sure your legs are properly attired on November 2. Everyone else will be showing their solidarity with the two million children under the age of five who are dying of pneumonia in 2009 and you should too.

Please do all you can to make this event a success. We are not asking for money. We are only asking for your legs (and your heart) for one day.

“We have what it takes to prevent and cure childhood pneumonia. Yet the disease tragically claims more than two million babies and toddlers every year. We can stand on the sides and continue to watch this tragedy unfold or we can step in and change the ending. World Pneumonia Day gives everyone the chance to act.”

"I work on a TV show that features the unusual, the bizarre, the unique. But the cases on House are brightly-colored minnows compared to the leviathan of pneumonia. It's so big, you couldn't make a TV show about it. But you could change it. So could I. We can and must change it."
