INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE: IN THE VOID BETWEEN PROFESSIONALS AND AMATEURS (9–10 OCTOBER 2009, PRAGUE)
… results, difficulties, and the relationship between professional institutions and civic associations, volunteer enthusiasts, and state and local administration in the area of knowledge and conservation of industrial heritage and its adapted new use…
The two-day conference is organized by the Research Centre for Industrial Heritage at the Czech Technical University (VCPD) in cooperation with the British Council and will be held at its traditional location – the Old Sewage Treatment Plan in Prague-Bubeneč. The theme of 2009 is one that in the Czech Republic has thus far been avoided and is a delicate and even controversial issue:
“Industrial Heritage and the Void between Professionals and Amateurs” – on the pros, cons, and means of cooperation between professional institutions, voluntary enthusiasts, civic associations, interests groups and local and federal political representation in the evaluation and conservation of industrial heritage.
The conference themes present speakers from the academic environment, professional institutions, civic initiatives, and interest and artistic associations and groups. British Council representing a cradle of industrial regeneration two big names of the industrial heritage field: Steve Miller, Chief Executive of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, Bill Ferris, Chief executive of Chatham Historic Dockyard and chair of the Association of Independent Museums. The theme will be further presented by other speakers from the academic environment, professional institutions, civic initiatives, and interest and artistic associations and groups such as Norbert Tempel from Westfalisches Industriemusem in Dortmund, Lars Scharnholz from the Institut für Neue Industriekultur, Forst, Germany.
Part of the conference and final short workshop will focus on sharing knowledge across Europe, creating platform for the exchange of opinions and for spreading information and awareness about the adapted new use of industrial heritage. Therefore we would like to invite Creative Cities project’s partners to attend the conference and bring their valuable experience. We are particularly looking for organizations that are ready to play an active role and prepare a short presentation about the situation of the situation in their countries and via presenting their work suggest ways to overcome the void described above.
British Council partners will be free of registration fees and we can also arrange an accommodation in the university hotel near the conference premises for a reduced price.
Apart from the conference, the Biennial programme offers number of exhibitions, various cultural events and excursions on the theme of industrial heritage in the Czech Republic.
