Leave JB Hi-Fi and Sanity behind, and celebrate Record Store Day (April 18) in truly independent Australian record stores!
2008 marked the first Record Store Day. This event, established in the United States was intended to be a celebration of the unique culture surrounding independently owned record stores. The day was celebrated worldwide, with many independent Australian stores hosting live performances, barbeques and other events.
In 2009, Australia's celebration of Record Store Day is in danger of being railroaded by AMRA (The Australian Music Retailers’ Association). While claiming to represent independent record stores, AMRA's membership primarily consists of JB Hi-Fi, Sanity, Virgin and other chain stores across Australia.
After initially planning to coordinate the event with the REAL Record Store Day, AMRA were told that publicly listed companies like JB Hi-Fi could not participate in an event established to promote INDEPENDENT record stores. In response, AMRA have announced "Record Store Day Australia" on the exact same day, diverting attention away from Australia's independent stores, and paving the way for music supermarkets like JB and Sanity to host their own events.
On April 18, remember what Record Store Day is all about: a day for independently owned record stores to come together with artists and music lovers to celebrate the art of music. Visit, support and cherish your local independent record store.
