Hi everyone,

I am back from 16 wonderful days in Oaxaca where I taught with David Allan Harvey a National Geographic Workshop, and produced our first workshop for Mary Ellen Mark.

I want to devote a few lines to talk about this wonderful workshop. Although I was very familiar with the stellar work of Mary Ellen, I had never attended one of her workshops. I got to tell you, her dedication as a teacher and the one on one level of attention her students get, I had never seen before.

After the portfolio review in the spectacular Art Center in San Agustin Etla; each student and Mary Ellen agree on their assignment for the week. This individual project ranges from spending time with a local family, photographing small town events, documenting weddings to spending time in Oaxaca’s slaughterhouse. Once both, student and Mary Ellen, have agreed on the project, Mary Ellen’s sidekick, Mexican photographer Marcela Taboada, will coordinate the shoot.

Every morning Mary Ellen meets privately with each student for a critique, selection of his/her best work and to receive pointers on how to improve their shooting. Each night, at the Manuel Alvarez Bravo Photographic Center in Oaxaca, Mary Ellen and guest photographers devote two hours to lectures and presentation of work. I was honored to show work at Mary Ellen’s request.

By the end of the week the best work of every student is compiled in a book for the students to take home.
This workshop is an advanced, yet wonderful experience in refined photography. We have uploaded some images so you can “feel” a little bit what the experience is all about.

We have already started discussions to expand the program to India and Spain. Hope you can join us in the next workshop in Oaxaca, Mexico in July.

Speaking of Oaxaca, don’t forget this is the first year we are, in partnership with National Geographic, running a Day of the Dead Workshops in this city. Fellow National Geographic photographer Kenneth Garret will accompany me in this adventure.

All the best,
Raul Touzon
