99.2 Yfm today officially opened doors to its new home in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
A glittering array of business leaders, media personalities, scientists, and diplomats gathered outside the station’s new home in Dunkeld West for the ribbon cutting by chairman of Yfm’s board, Marcel Golding.
The 1800 square metre two-storey facility which will now be known as the Yfm Building is in the South West part of Dunkeld Crescent, Albury Road, across the road from the Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre and next door to the headquarters of sister company etv.
The Yfm technical and marketing teams worked closely together in the design of the new studios to ensure operating efficiency while at the same time creating a space that the Yfm team could be proud of. This is immediately obvious as one enters through the front door, where the double-height entryway reveals an almost panoramic view of the main studio with the DJ in the spotlight.
The Yfm ethos of complete transparency is reflected throughout the building where every office and studio features full-length glass walls. The new studios are based on next generation digital desks connected by several kilometres of network cables which replace the more fragile fibre optics of the old studios. This will allow for seamless transitions between the studio and outside broadcast units as well as the new Yfm News studio.
Yfm CEO Kanthan Pillay says the new building is a celebration of the dramatic rise in the fortunes of Gauteng’s youth in the brief period since the station took to the airwaves.
“It was just 12 years ago in October 1997 that 99.2 Yfm took to the airwaves from Bertrams near the Johannesburg CBD,” said Pillay. “The station began broadcasting with used equipment from the legendary Radio Freedom which had been the voice of the ANC and MK in exile from Lusaka. The Yfm studio in Bertrams did not yet have phone lines, and the team made use of a payphone on the premises.
“After dramatic growth in listenership over the next two years, the station moved into The Zone in Rosebank where we became the focal point for GP's urban youth. But the time has come to move on. Our new home in Hyde Park is a larger space that allows us to literally take Yfm to the next level. Most importantly, it brings our commercial and creative teams into the same physical space. This is a reminder to our programming and news team that we are part of a serious business, but equally reminds our corporate side that Yfm is the sexiest place to work in the sexiest country in Africa and the world.”
Factoids:
• Yfm reaches more than 1,6 million listeners in the greater Gauteng area.

To date, 42 candidates have passed through the Y Academy.
