Safe Routes to School is a National program designed to enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school; to make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative; and to facilitate the planning , devolopment, and implementation of projects and activities that will impore safety adn reduce traffic, fuel consumption and air pollution in the vicinity of schools. Today, today less than fifteen percent of children walk or bicycle to school. The sharp decline in walking and bicycling has had a negative impact on traffic congestion, air quality and student safety around schools. SRTS addressees these concerns by focusing on the 5 E's: Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering and Evaluation.
